CECP 118: Harvard Leadership Series
3.00 Credits
Tompkins Cortland Community College
Leadership requires an entirely new set of skills moderated by a different view of the organization, its people and culture. New Leaders become successful only when they master these three areas. The Harvard Leadership series brings these leadership challenges to life through the use of Harvard Business Review case studies. Topics include: -leading with emotional intelligence -strategic systems thinking -sparking high performance -confronting the tough stuff Leading with Emotional Intelligence Technical competence has long been thought to be the determining factor in advancement and has been for years a major consideration when identifying candidates for growth. While this certainly had its own merit, a changing and increasingly diverse and complex workplace now calls for a different skill set. Through recent research, it is now believed that the ability to interact with others effectively may be an even greater barometer for success with technical skills- especially in leadership positions. Emotional Intelligence has grown in popularity as a way to identify key interpersonal traits that most impact employee performance and the techniques that enable people to utilize these skills most effectively. The workshop will focus on a clear understanding of EQ and enhance the ways that leaders can use it to increase their effectiveness in accomplishing organizational goals. Confronting the "Tough Stuff" Leaders are faced with a diverse set of challenges every day and are required to make decisions swiftly. Among the most "tricky" of these are those emotionally charged situations that call for a cool head and heart. They may relate to a workplace issue, yet they invariably connect with interpersonal issues as well. These situations may include managing arguments, handling discipline problems, schedule conflicts, hygiene, ethical issues and client dissatisfaction to name a few. Handling them professionally requires poise and skill. This workshop addresses some of these tough situations and provides tools to deal with them effectively. Raising the Bar Inspiring consistent levels of performance in otheres has always been an ongoing challenge of leadership. We know from extensive research that many people operate below their full potential and capabilities, and in many cases, may not even be fully aware of this shortfall. This workshop will explore the fascinating world of motivation- what is is, what enhances it and what will maintain it at peak levels. Participants will explore differing approaches to accurately identify key motivators in an individual and connect them to attaining higher levels of performance. Through the use of case studies, participants will learn how to apply these techniques to actual workplace situations. Facilitating Organizational Change It is no secret that the business world is very much involvedin a dramatic pace of change. Organizations are required to respond to customers rapidly, incorporate new technologies, and implement continuous improvements in their operations. The speed at which employees must react to these changes is blinding and unsettling. One of the best ways to facilitate change is through effective leaders who understand the impact of these forces on the individual employee and to develop practical tools to help people through the transition. This workshop focuses on the development of these tools, so that change can take place in a smoother and less disruptive manner. Facilitated by a veteran of leadership in the private sector, and trainer with an excellent reputation for bringing theory into line with reality, this series will give you the chance to test your leadership instincts and to hone your skills.

It has been stated that 'a project is a problem scheduled for solution'. The last course expands upon this statement as we look at a project as much more than just buying software and putting an engineer in charge. The last topic concerns the number one resource, people. Some have said it would be so easy 'if it wasn't for the people.' Through an understanding of organizational behavior and the exercising of proper leadership, people can truly become the number one resource.
