The purpose of this course is to help students to understand the meaning of the New Testament from a historical and critical study of its cultural and religious context, its gradual composition, and the ideas it is intended to communicate. Prerequisite: RS100A. Satisfies the second institutional requirement in religious and theological studies. Three hours a week.

A study of the Gospels in the light of the developments in New Testament scholarship in the last century. Investigates the nature of the historical sources for our knowledge of Jesus in order to extract from them a picture of the man, Jesus. In addition, we will try to understand his message and the claims Jesus made about himself, as well as the claims that the earliest Christian writers made about him. To this end we will study the historical, political, and religious background of the life of Jesus. This will enable us to establish a specialized perspective from which we can evaluate the picture of Jesus developed in the four Gospels. Prerequisite: RS100A. The course investigates the Bible as a “gendered”text of Christian and Jewish religious history and practice. It introduces students to the pertinent gender theories, primary texts, and scholarly discussions. The course also helps students to develop an understanding about the lasting influences of the Bible on past and present formations of gender as practiced in Western culture, politics, and religion. An introductory study of the religious influences and teachings which have shaped Japanese culture. Includes Confucianism, Taoism, Buddhism, and Shinto as well as examination of the syncretic nature of Japanese Religion. Investigates practices as well as texts: the practice not only of the religious elite monks, nuns, and priests - but also the practices of the general populace. Studies texts including selections from the Analects of Confucius, the Tao Te Ching, the Kojoki, the Nihongi, the Jataka, and various Buddhist sutras as well as modern fiction. Prerequisite: RS100A. Satisfies the second institutional requirement in religious and theological studies. Three hours a week.

The Holocaust was the secular expression of a “theology of replacement” that finds expression inscripture, in the writings of the Church Fathers, in medieval devotional literature and practices in Reformation essays, and in other prominent Christian sources. The course will trace the development of the “teaching of contempt” from itsroots in a misuse of John’s Gospel to its obscene flowering in the “Final Solution” of the Nazis.Prerequisite: RS100A. An interpretation of the rise of African-American theology from its African origins to the present day. Attention to different perspectives on African-American theology, its dialogue with Third World theologies, the responses of Euro-American theologians, and the recent development of womanist theology. Lectures, discussion groups and student presentations. Prerequisite: RS100A. Satisfies the second institutional requirement in religious and theological studies. Three hours a week.

This course will examine scientific theories of evolution (cosmic and biological) in the light of Christian claims about the Bible, God, and Creation. We will endeavor to separate the scientific content of the theories from religious and philosophical biases that often distort the conclusions that can be drawn from them. To that end we will study the historical development of the theories of evolution and examine the scientific and religious reaction to those theories, not only in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, but also recent reactions and developments, both scientific and religious. Prerequisite: RS100A. Satisfies the second institutional requirement in religious and theological studies. Three hours a week.

This course explores Sacramental Theology through the examination of anthropological and theological perspectives. The human phenomena of word, symbol, ritual, and myth and the theological perspective of God’s call and humanity’sresponse will form the basis of the investigation. The study of historical origins, which gradually evolved into the contemporary rituals, will enlighten the deeper mysterion and meaning of Catholicism’s seven sacraments. In addition, the course will explore the ecumenical discussion on “sacrament” and recent studies includingProtestant understanding and practice. Prerequisite: RS100A. Miryam of Nazareth, the Jewish heroine of humanity, is claimed by the Christian church to be the bearer of God and the first disciple of Jesus. Explores contemporary thinking on Mary the Virgin and implications for interfaith dialogue, liberation, meaning of woman, and spirituality for the Christian. References to Mary in scripture and liturgy examined. Also explored: interdenominational theological approaches including the ecumenical dialogue on Mary, common sources of the first centuries, the Jewish Mary, goddess and mother images in other world religions, human right and feminism, and a sensible study of the meaning of apparitions and Marian prayer. Marian music and art from the Roman era to modernity presented throughout course. Prerequisite: RS100A. Satisfies the second institutional requirement in relgious and theological studies. Three hours a week.
