An introductory study of the religious influences and teachings which have shaped Japanese culture. Includes Confucianism, Taoism, Buddhism, and Shinto as well as examination of the syncretic nature of Japanese Religion. Investigates practices as well as texts: the practice not only of the religious elite monks, nuns, and priests - but also the practices of the general populace. Studies texts including selections from the Analects of Confucius, the Tao Te Ching, the Kojoki, the Nihongi, the Jataka, and various Buddhist sutras as well as modern fiction. Prerequisite: RS100A. Satisfies the second institutional requirement in religious and theological studies. Three hours a week.
