RS 222A - Jesus and the Gospels

Institution:
Merrimack College
Subject:
Description:
A study of the Gospels in the light of the developments in New Testament scholarship in the last century. Investigates the nature of the historical sources for our knowledge of Jesus in order to extract from them a picture of the man, Jesus. In addition, we will try to understand his message and the claims Jesus made about himself, as well as the claims that the earliest Christian writers made about him. To this end we will study the historical, political, and religious background of the life of Jesus. This will enable us to establish a specialized perspective from which we can evaluate the picture of Jesus developed in the four Gospels. Prerequisite: RS100A. Satisfies the second institutional requirement in religious and theological studies. Three hours a week.
