Miryam of Nazareth, the Jewish heroine of humanity, is claimed by the Christian church to be the bearer of God and the first disciple of Jesus. Explores contemporary thinking on Mary the Virgin and implications for interfaith dialogue, liberation, meaning of woman, and spirituality for the Christian. References to Mary in scripture and liturgy examined. Also explored: interdenominational theological approaches including the ecumenical dialogue on Mary, common sources of the first centuries, the Jewish Mary, goddess and mother images in other world religions, human right and feminism, and a sensible study of the meaning of apparitions and Marian prayer. Marian music and art from the Roman era to modernity presented throughout course. Prerequisite: RS100A. Satisfies the second institutional requirement in relgious and theological studies. Three hours a week.
