The Holocaust was the secular expression of a “theology of replacement” that finds expression inscripture, in the writings of the Church Fathers, in medieval devotional literature and practices in Reformation essays, and in other prominent Christian sources. The course will trace the development of the “teaching of contempt” from itsroots in a misuse of John’s Gospel to its obscene flowering in the “Final Solution” of the Nazis.Prerequisite: RS100A. Satisfies the second institutional requirement in religious and theological studies. Three hours a week.
