    In this course, candidates acquire knowledge of the philosophical, historical, cultural, and societal factors that impact the education of English language learners in the United States. Components of dual language programs will be identified; discussion regarding the provision of instruction in the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards will ensue. Candidates will demonstrate commitment and competence related to the New Jersey Professional Standards for Teachers as they apply to English language learners. Three credits, one semester.

    Instructional strategies and techniques to assist children with limited English proficiency progress in the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards will be investigated. Candidates will have the opportunity to observe in bilingual/ESL classes and to demonstrate lessons in the University classroom. Candidates will demonstrate commitment and competence related to the New Jersey Professional Standards for Teachers as they apply to English language learners. Three credits, one semester.

    Linguistics and language acquisition will be the main focus of this course. Candidates will develop an understanding of the developmental process involved in second language acquisition. A special emphasis will be placed on the linguistics (phonology, morphology, and syntax) and the impact of culture on the development of a second language. Candidates will demonstrate commitment and competence related to the New Jersey Professional Standards for Teachers as they apply to English language learners. Three credits, one semester.

    Materials and methods for teaching students with limited English proficiency and helping them achieve the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards will be studied. Candidates will learn to develop appropriate lesson and unit plans, including instructional and evaluation methods and will demonstrate the values and commitment for diversity and student learning outcomes. Candidates will demonstrate commitment and competence related to the New Jersey Professional Standards for Teachers as they apply to English language learners. Three credits, one semester.

    The development of reading, writing, and speaking skills for non-native English speakers will be the emphasis of this course. Candidates will apply instructional and assessment strategies and techniques, as well as develop appropriate materials to assist non-native English speakers to progress in the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards. Candidates will demonstrate commitment and competence related to the New Jersey Professional Standards for Teachers as they apply to English language learners. Three credits, one semester.

    Philosophical, historical and cultural background of limited-English-proficient students considering the ipact of societal factors on educational planning for these students. Componenets of dual language programs include readings and discussions of the philosophy and history of non-English cultures Critiques of bilingual and English-as-a-Second Language programs. 3 hours lecture, one semester; 3 credits.

    Examination of the relationship between research, theory and practice in bilingual education. Investigation of the development and planning of a bilingual curriculum. Instructional strategies and methods of evaluation in the first and second language of the learner. Observation of bilingual classes and demonstration of lessons. 3 hours lecture, one semester; 3 credits.

    The relationship of linguistic, cognitive, attitudinal and behavioral patterns within each culture and how they affect cross-cultural communication and second language education. Considerations of such relationships with various languages and cultures as examples. 3 hours lecture, one semester; 3 credits.

    Strategies involved in the planning and implementation of second language instruction. Relationship to and integration with the total curriculum. Learning styles of limited-English-proficient students. Unit, lesson planning, presentation skills, methods of evaluation and values relevant to second language education. 3 hours lecture, one semester; 3 credits.

    Examination of the relationship between research, theory and practice in the teaching of English as a Second Language. Analysis of instructional materials, evaluation instruments, learning environments and curriculum in relation to the development and individual experiences of limited-English-proficient students. 90 hour clinical experience in ESL. 90-hour clinical experience in ESL and traditional settings required for students pursuing initial certification. Prerequisite: BE401. 3 hours lecture, 90 hours (15 days) of clinical observation and participation; one semester; 3 credits.
