    Reading Fundamentals I is designed to fulfill one major objective: proficiency in the reading comprehension skills necessary for competent work in Reading Fundamentals II (DHH-062). The course content is closely related to materials taught in Writing Fundamentals I. It is specifically designed with the special reading instructional needs of deaf and hard of hearing students in mind, i.e., American Sign Language's relationship to English and ESL methodologies for the deaf. It is specifically designed with the special reading instructional needs of deaf and hard of hearing students in mind, i.e., American Sign Language's relationship to English and ESL methodologies for the deaf.     This course covers topics of interest and relevance for deaf and hard of hearing students beginning their college experience. It is for students enrolled in the Preparatory Program for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Students. Lecture and group discussion of selected life management topics are the main instructional approaches. Topics include support services, how to utilize sign language interpreters, interpreter's code of ethics, sexual harassment policy; landlord tenant relations, getting along with roommates, Supplemental Security Income (SSI) rules and regulations, Americans with Disabilities Act and Section 504 of the 1973 Rehabilitation Act, health maintenance, basic nutrition (healthy eating and proper diet), oral hygiene and dental services, New Jersey relay services, and organizations for the Deaf and Heard of Hearing.     The final communication course is designed to prepare the student for entrance into the work force. The course content will include the study of business vocabulary and standard language used in business, and an introduction to business correspondence (through letters and memos).     Dental Hygiene I Seminar is a lecture course offering the student an opportunity to gain knowledge and understanding in the foundation of the clinical practice of dental hygiene. Through the use of lectures, demonstrations, audiovisual aids/class activities and practical experience, the student will develop his/her skills in the following areas: infection control/OSHA guidelines; legal/ethical issues; medical/ dental history evaluation; patient data collection; periodontal examination; dental disease etiology & prevention; plaque control; communication skills; principles of instrumentation utilizing the mirror, probe, explorer and curets; assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of patients using the dental hygiene care process.     Dental Radiology is a pre-clinical course designed to provide the dental hygiene student the opportunity to gain knowledge of the origin, production, and utilization of radiation in dentistry. Emphasis is placed on concepts of radiation safety and patient management. Through lecture and laboratory sessions the student will gain practical experience in exposing, processing, and mounting dental radiographs of diagnostic quality and the use of digital imaging.     This course is a lecture/discussion period designed to impart further knowledge and understanding of the clinical practice of the dental hygienist throughout the assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation phases of treatment. The student will acquire theoretical and clinical information in the following areas: principles of instrumentation utilizing curets and scalers, treatment planning/documentation, plaque control, tooth stains/polishing agents and techniques, topical fluoride application, instrument sharpening, evaluation and recall procedures, intraoral photography, care of prosthetic appliances, patient management, motivation and behavior modification, and nutritional counseling.     Dental Anatomy is a first semester course for the first-year dental hygiene student. The course is designed to provide the student with knowledge and understanding of the nomenclature used in dentistry, the anatomy and physiology of the primary and permanent dentition, the relationship of the supporting tissues of the teeth, the relationship of the teeth within each arch, and the occlusion of the maxillary and mandibular teeth. Instructional aids for the lecture series include dental typodonts, oversized tooth models, color slides, cross-sectioned models, and extracted teeth.     This course presents the study of anatomy, physiology, histology and embryology of the head, neck, and oral cavity. Introductory lectures in general histology are presented. Other sciences are mentioned in reference to the musculature, blood and nerve supply, bones, landmarks, sinuses, and foramina of the respective areas.
