    This is the first of four courses in Southwest's Medical Transcription program. This hands-on program utilizes the poplar SUM Medical Transcription Program. Medical Transcriptionists work in a variety of settings (medical clinics, doctor s offices, hospitals, private transcription businesses and home offices). There is a shortage of qualified medical transcriptionists locally and nationwide. This career requires skilled, educated professionals who transcribe doctors notes concerning patient care, surgical procedures, autopsies and laboratory reports. This Beginning Medical Transcription Module I course covers transcription that is generally used in a physician s office, group practice, or small clinic and takes approximately 200 hours to complete the transcription and all the recommended course work. Through a combination of independent study and open lab times staffed with a qualified medical transcriptionist, four courses are required to complete the program: Beginning Medical Transcription Module I, Beginning Medical Transcription Module II, Intermediate Surgery Transcription, and Advanced Medical Transcription. This program uniquely integrates Medical Terminology, Anatomy, and Transcribing in a way that helps students become prepared for a career as a Medical Transcriptionist. Students who satisfactorily complete all four courses in the program and will receive a Medical Transcription CEU Certificate. Students will need to have access to a computer and will need to purchase the required textbooks, software, headset and foot pedal. Prerequisites: Successful students will have mastery in English, grammar, punctuation, excellent spelling, and keyboarding skills of 45+ corrected words per minute.     This is the third of four courses in Southwest s Medical Transcription Program. It covers transcription as it relates to several different types of surgery. Students work independently at home and attend assisted labs. It takes approximately 160 hours to complete the transcription and all the recommended course work. Students will need to have access to a computer and purchase any required materials and software. It covers hospital dictation such as operative reports, diagnostic procedures,discharge summaries, radiology, and pathology dictation. Students work independently at home and during assisted labs. It takes approximately 400 hours to complete the transcription and all the recommended course work. Students who complete the required coursework and should be prepared to begin their career as a Medical Transcriptionist in a variety of settings (medical clinics, doctor s offices, hospitals, private transcription businesses and home offices). Students will need to have access to a computer and will need to purchase any required materials and software.     This course is designed as an exam preparation course for those interested in taking the Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam. All three major sections of the exam which include Serving Patients, Medication and Inventory Control Systems, and Administration and Pharmacy Practice will be covered. This course will cover additional information on pharmacology as it relates to specific body systems and will review the basic math required for pharmacy measurements and calculations. Practice texts will be utilized to help the students identify their strengths and weaknesses, monitor their progress, and improve their text taking skills.     This 90 hour Phlebotomy Technician Program prepares professionals to collect blood specimens from clients for the purpose of laboratory analysis. Students will become familiar with all aspects related to blood collection and develop comprehensive skills to perform venipunctures completely and safely. Classroom and lab work includes terminology, anatomy and physiology; blood collection procedures; specimen hands-on practice; and training in skills and techniques to perform puncture methods. The program also includes lab exercises, live blood draws, work with a training arm and other exercises intended to prepare students to function as an entry level phlebotomy technician. Note: There is no outside externship rotation included with this program. Although not required to work as a phlebotomy technician, students who wish to pursue a clinical rotation should contact local health care organizations to arrange their personal clinical schedule.     This comprehensive 50 hour course will prepare students to enter the pharmacy field and take the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board s (PTCB) exam. Technicians work in hospitals, home infusion pharmacies, community pharmacies and other health care settings working under the supervision of a registered pharmacist. Course content includes medical terminology specific to the pharmacy, reading and interpreting prescriptions and defining drugs by generic and brand names. Students will learn dosage calculations, I.V. flow rates, drug compounding, dose conversions, dispensing of prescriptions, inventory control and billing and reimbursement. Prerequisites: Students should have taken math and science in high school.     The need for professionals who understand how to code health care services and procedures for third party insurance reimbursement is growing substantially. This combined 70 hour billing and coding course offers the skills needed to solve insurance billing problems, manually file claims (using the CPT and ICD-9 manual), complete common insurance forms, trace delinquent claims, appeal denied claims and use generic forms to streamline billing procedures. The course covers the following areas: CPT (Introduction, Guidelines, Evaluation and Management), specialty fields (such as surgery, radiology and laboratory), ICD-9 (Introduction and Guidelines) and basic claims processes for medical insurance and third party reimbursements. Students will learn how to find the service codes using CPT, ICD-9 and HCPCS manuals. After obtaining practical work experience (6 months to 2 years), students who complete this course could be qualified to sit for the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC) Certified Professional Coder exam (CPC or CPC-H Apprentice); the American Health Information Association (AHIMA) Certified Coding Associate (CCA) exam; and/or other national certification exams. This entry level course does not require the use of a computer as the focus of a coding professional is the proper use of coding and the related coding manuals.
