Students also evaluate the alternatives of entering the job market with a two-year degree or transferring to a four-year program. Weekly guest speakers provide up-to-date information about specialty fields, including therapeutic recreation, parks management, corporate fitness, sports merchandising, YMCAs, and military recreation. Students visit community agencies as part of coursework requirements.

The course covers swimming techniques, water rescue techniques, swim area supervision, use of lifesaving equipment, and the use of fins, mask, and snorkel. First aid and CPR are part of the course, as well as health and sanitation considerations for pool and waterfront. The course will also cover the history and philosophy of lifeguarding as well as recordkeeping and preparation of reports. Successful students will earn a Lifeguard Training Certificate as well as CPR and Basic First Aid Certificates. Students must pass a 500-yard swim test the first night of class. This class is also listed as PED 132.

Students examine their present personal skills and identify areas that are lacking or are in need of refinement. They research various settings where a field work experience is feasible and compatible with their needs. Each student prepares a resume, visits sites, interviews, and finalizes arrangements for an on-site internship in a public, private, or commercial recreation setting. For this part of the fieldwork experience, students will do a 30-hour internship where they will have the opportunity to observe and shadow a professional in the field. Prerequisites: REC 100, 200, or 213, and by advisement. Corequisite: CSC 101 or by advisement.
