Science in the Modern World Pre: Co: This course examines the role of science in Eurpoean and American society through the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. We will explore the development of new scientific theories in the life sciences and the physical sciences (including evolution, relativity, quantum mechanics, and genetics), address the institutionalization of science in Western society, and consider how science came to be applied to various social, cultural, and military concerns of the modern world. No science or history background is required, but students should be ready to confront and grapple with some new and challenging ideas in both disciplines. War and Peace in the Nuclear Age Pre: Co: Elect:OPEN, LA, SOC SCI A telecourse aired on Channel 2. Instead of classroom meetings, students will complete assignments on an independent basis. The 13 one-hour segments document the story of the nuclear age, focusing on Cold War relations between the U.S. and U.S.S.R. superpowers. Explored are key events such as the Cuban Missile crisis and efforts to achieve arms control. Implications for the future will be considered. Transformations of Myth Through Time Pre: Co: Elect:OPEN, LA, HUMANITIES This telecourse presents a fresh perspective on the interaction of myth, religion, and culture with special emphasis on the writings and ideas of Joseph Campbell and his insights into how myths reconcile human beings to the mysteries of life. The course consists of thirteen hour-long programs broadcast on channels 2 and 44.
