Science in the Modern World Pre: Co: This course examines the role of science in Eurpoean and American society through the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. We will explore the development of new scientific theories in the life sciences and the physical sciences (including evolution, relativity, quantum mechanics, and genetics), address the institutionalization of science in Western society, and consider how science came to be applied to various social, cultural, and military concerns of the modern world. No science or history background is required, but students should be ready to confront and grapple with some new and challenging ideas in both disciplines. Fulfills open, liberal arts, social science, history, and science electives.
