    An exploration of theories and empirical findings in the areas of sensation and perception. Topics covered include: psychophysics, basic visual processes, color vision, form perception, depth perception, movement perception, basic auditory processes, auditory perception and other senses. Prerequisite: BI106A or consent of the instructor. Co-requisite: PS 210A. Satisfies the social science distribution requirement. Three lecture hours and one laboratory period a week.

    Examines major empirical and theoretical work on human information processing. Focuses on basic processes including sensory storage, pattern recognition, attention and memory. Also addresses complex cognitive processes including language, problem solving and decision making. Prerequisite: PS 210A. Satisfies the social science distribution requirement. Three lecture hours and one laboratory period a week.

    Examination of the relationship between the nervous system and behavior, with special emphasis on higher cognitive functions and the central nervous system. In addition to low-level visual and somatosensory perception, topics include the neurophysiology of memory, language, functional lateralization, mental illnesses, sleep, and dreaming. Prerequisite: BI 106A or consent of the instructor. Co-requisite: PS210A. Satisfies the social science distribution requirement. Three lecture hours and one laboratory period a week.

    Analysis of psychology from a historical perspective. Emphasis on the dynamics involved in the evolution of the science of psychology as well as the continuity and reciprocal interrelationships that exist between psychology’s supposedly opposing schools of thought. Prerequisite: PS 101A. Satisfies the social science distribution requirement. Three hours a week.

    Introduction to the history, theory, and methods of psychological testing. Explores how psychological tests are used to assess various psychological phenomena including personality, interests, attitudes, and mental ability. Considers controversies surrounding the use of psychological tests. Utilizes a “hands-on” approach. Prerequisite: PS 101A. Corequisite:PS 210A or a comparable statistics course (e.g., MA 111A or BE 213A). Three hours a week.

    Consideration of current theories and research on culture, race, and ethnicity, and the ways in which sociocultural context influences psychological processes. Includes a focus on empirical methods in cultural psychology, and an examination of cultural groups within and outside of the United States. Also includes a consideration of issues of culture in the interpretation of personal experience and in the application of cultural diversity issues to various settings. Prerequisite: PS220A. Satisfies the social science distribution requirement. Three hours a week.

    An analysis of theory and research related to the development of thinking. Topics include an analysis of stages and levels in the development of different types of thinking, the relationship between language and thought, and the socialization of thought. Examines the perspectives of several major theorists including Piaget, Vygotsky, and contemporary cognitive theorists. Prerequisite: PS 230A. Satisfies the social science distribution requirement. Three hours a week.
  • 3.00 Credits

    Examines personality and social development from infancy to adulthood. Topics include in-depth analyses of socio-emotional development, the development of self, the development of attachment relationships, parent-child interaction, childchild interaction, and the interplay between individuation and social relations in development. Prerequisite: PS 230A. Satisfies the social science distribution requirement. Three hours a week.
