    An introduction to a structured procedural programming language. Topics will include program design, documentation, functions, file handling, repetition and decisions. Projects will be worked on in class, as well as assigned for computer lab sessions. Prerequisite: CSC 125 or previous programming experience note: non-early Childhood education students may register for most eaC courses, but consent of the instructor is required.

    designed to introduce the student to the field of early Childhood education from a philosophical, historical and educational perspective. Special attention will be given to contemporary educational models and to understanding the essential program elements needed to facilitate the development of the whole child. in addition to classroom lectures, students are required to observe in the Maria College Campus School, as well as in a variety of educational and clinical settings within the community. A minimum of 20 hours of observation is required in a minimum of three settings: elementary school (eight hours), day care (eight hours) and the Maria College Campus School (four hours).

    Lectures, workshops and practicum labs assist the student in planning quality learning experiences for the young child. The developmental needs and abilities of the infant, toddler, preschooler and special needs child will be studied. environmental factors that influence learning will also be explored. Laboratory: one morning or afternoon per week in the Maria College Campus School. This practicum provides the opportunity to become involved in overall classroom responsibilities, including observing, recording, interacting, planning and presenting or observation Participation Training (oPT). note: open only to eaC majors Prerequisite: eaC 100

    designed to provide students with an overview of the field of special education. it will include information on definitions and terms commonly used in the field, the historical and cultural aspects, and the laws and legal cases affecting the delivery of special education services. Students will also have an opportunity to observe programs designed to meet the special needs of young children. The student is required to complete 10 hours of observation.

    Students will study and discuss various theoretical approaches to classroom management and identify their potential strengths and appropriate applications to promote optimal learning. They will observe teachers in classroom settings to analyze how each classroom is organized and managed. emphasis will be placed on organization and planning before the child enters the classroom, meeting the needs of children with a full range of abilities, effective communication, organizing instruction, curriculum planning, procedure and developing rules with children. A minimum of five hours of observation/participation is required.

    designed to familiarize students with the wealth of children's literature available for the young child. Students will explore the history of children's literature and the various genre, categories and work with children in the larger family and societal context to develop optimal learning environments. Students will use literature themes and environmental print to promote children's ability to develop natural and functional use of language. emphasis will be placed on activities that involve listening, speaking, reading and writing. Students spend a minimum of two hours administering The early Literacy Profile assessment tool with age-appropriate children. This assessment takes place at theMaria College Lab School with the guidance of the college instructor and the director of the the Maria College Campus School. The two hours indicated reflects a minimum, as students have many opportunities to interact with the children in the Maria College Campus School, sharing literature and literacy activities.

    introduces the student to factors that contribute to the physical and emotional growth of children from conception to age eight. emphasis will be placed on developmental characteristics, experiences and activities that enhance psychomotor development, and principles of positive health care. Class lectures, readings, observations and workshops will be designed to acquaint the student with assessment tools, movement exploration experiences, design and use of space and materials to meet individual needs, concerns that relate to the child's nutritional needs, first aid and safety, drug use and abuse, and a basic introduction to medical terminology.

    A competency-based teaching experience for senior students working with children during their early childhood years. Students will work closely with master teachers and college supervisors in observing, recording, planning and evaluating activities that enhance the development of young children. The experience comprises half day participation, five days per week for two 7-1/2 week sessions, and is integrated with a one-hour weekly on-campus seminar with a college supervisor. (Upon determination, students will be placed in a community school/child care agency.) Prerequisites: eaC 100, 101 Corequisite: eaC 240
  • 1.00 - 6.00 Credits

    An opportunity for seniors with an overall average of "B" or better to pursue a project of theirown design under supervision. A detailed proposal and approval are necessary prior to registration for independent study.
