This course examines language development and evidence-based practices for systematically planning and explicitly teaching foundational oral language and reading skills to students with disabilities including autism spectrum disorder, cognitive impairment, emotional impairment, and specific learning disability including those with dyslexia. This course provides a basis for understanding and addressing behavior challenges of diverse learners through implementation of positive behavioral interventions and supports (PBIS) at the school-wide, classroom, and individual levels. Students will learn to utilize multi-tiered systems of support for behavior decision-making to improve outcomes for all students. Offered winter and spring/summer semesters. This course addresses the language and communication needs of students with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Specific focus is placed on implementing language and communication interventions based on assessment data to improve the educational outcomes of students with ASD. Offered fall and winter semesters. This course will explore assessment and educational interventions for supporting students with autism spectrum disorder. Focus is placed on individualized services, supports, and interventions that promote inclusion in general education settings and participation in the general education curriculum. Focuses on positive behavior supports and social-emotional learning for children ages birth to kindergarten, including those with disabilities or delays, with an emphasis on using techniques to decrease suspensions of young children. Focuses on relationship building, supportive environments, motivation and engagement tactics, prosocial behaviors, and prevent/teach/reinforce and crisis management approaches. Offered fall semester. Prerequisite: EDI 312. Corequisite: EDI 341, or EDI 441, or EDS 470.

This course explores instruction for students with a cognitive impairment. This includes prescribing materials appropriate for implementing a curricular framework, individualized supports, functional focus, lesson planning, and instructional techniques. Application of skills and tasks related to working with families, adaptive behavior instruction/assessment, and connecting data to action are included. Prerequisites: Declaration of special education major. Corequisites: EDS 471 and EDS 418.
