    Focuses on teaching activities of a secondary mathematics teacher within the frameworks of the PA Frameworks for Mathematics 5 - 8 and 9 - 12, PA grade level expectations in mathematics; NCTM principles and standards of school mathematics (PSSM); and the NCTM professional standards for teaching mathematics. Topics include secondary mathematics curriculum, goals and objectives of instruction, planning and conducting mathematics instruction, history of mathematics education in the USA, student assessment, teacher evaluation, and the use of mathematical resources. Fieldwork required and clearances are necessary. Prerequisite: EDUC 302A. (Open to certification candidates only.) Fall, 3 hours lecture and discussion + field assignments, 3 credits.

    Focuses on the study and practice of teaching activities in elementary and secondary reading, writing, speaking, and listening within the scope of the PA framework for K-12 grade level. Expectations in reading, writing, speaking, and listening and the NCTE/IRA Standards for the English language arts will be stressed. Fieldwork required and clearances are necessary. Fall and Spring, 3 hours lecture and discussion + field assignments, 3 credits.

    Assists students in preparing education materials related to curriculum units for use during student teaching. Students design and create classroom materials that meet recognized standards. Fieldwork required and clearances are necessary. Prerequisite: EDUC 302A (except Child and Society majors). Fall and Spring, Workshop format, 1-3 credits.

    Integrates the study of theories, practices, and resources for the teaching and learning of basic skills and concepts for children ages 3-5. Provides both the theoretical and practical knowledge necessary for planning, implementing, and assessing learning in preschool classes. Students take this course as part of a professional block during the first half of a semester. Students spend a minimum of five one-half days each week in the classroom where they will be student teaching. A student teaching assignment will follow during the second half of the semester. Requires faculty consent. Fieldwork required and clearances are necessary. (Open to certification candidates only.) Fall and Spring, 2 hours workshop format, 2 credits.

    Supervised, seven-week student teaching experience in preschool settings with children through age five. Emphasis is on development, implementation, and assessment of appropriate learning activities; creating a caring community of learners; and management of the learning environment. Fieldwork required and clearances are necessary. (Open to certification candidates only.) Fall and Spring, 6 credits.

    Supervised, seven-week student teaching experience in intermediate settings (grades 4, 5, 6) provide teaching opportunities to meet the needs of individual learners through differentiated instructional strategies and classroom management techniques. During this seven-week experience, candidates are expected to select and employ the methodologies and strategies modeled and practiced during the pre-practicum to meet the needs of all learners in the classroom. Fieldwork required and clearances are necessary. Requires faculty consent. (Open to certification candidates only.) Fall and Spring, 6 credits.
  • 6.00 Credits

    Supervised, seven-week student teaching experience at the secondary level under the guidance of a cooperating teacher and a college supervisor. Included in the experience is the design and implementation of an integrated, thematic unit and the opportunity to use teacher feedback, video review, reflection, and self-evaluation as tools to improve teaching. Fieldwork required and clearances are necessary. Requires faculty consent. (Open to certification candidates only.) Fall and Spring, 6 credits.

    Supervised, seven-week student teaching experience at the K-3 level under the guidance of a cooperating teaching and a college supervisor. The experience provides teaching opportunities to meet the needs of individual learners though differentiated instructional strategies and classroom management techniques. During this seven-week experience, candidates are expected to select and employ the methodologies and strategies modeled and practiced during pre-practicum to meet the needs of all learners in the classroom. Fieldwork required and clearances are necessary. Requires faculty consent. (Open to certification candidates only.) Fall and Spring, $75 lab fee, 6 credits.
