This course offers the advanced student the opportunity to transform their integrative practice of occupational therapy by linking neurological functioning to occupational performance through the emergent approach of Neuro-Occupation. Neuro-occupation is a holistic perspective that combines the inter-related knowledge of neurology with the patterns, roles, and self-organization that is embedded in the complexity of occupational performance. Neuro-occupation facilitates learning, meaning, behavior, and self-organization in the context of occupation in natural environments. The course will guide the student through a review of neuro-anatomy and function through case examples of clients who exhibit neurological challenges. The student will engage in context specific classroom and on-line reading, discussion, and application of the nonlinear dynamics of human occupation.

After critiquing the finding from the research, students will work with a selected client (e.g., pediatrics or adult) to improve motor control. Topics to include constraint-induced therapy, physical activity, posture and balance, assessments, reaction time, motor learning principles, timing and sequencing. Class will meet 4 hours weekly (plus outside practicum).

Biopsychosocial theory and practice in mental health occupational therapy will be applied, evaluated and integrated. The intentional relationship model, with its emphasis on identifying interpersonal modes and building a broader interpersonal skill base, will be integrated with the foundational theoretical frameworks of the model of human occupation and sensory processing to create occupational therapy interventions for a wide variety of populations. Practice examples from fieldwork will be used for reflection, refinement and leadership toward establishment of strong mental health practice in occupational therapy.

This course integrates the health and human service professional into the transdisciplinary context of early intervention practice through play for children ages 18 months to 3 years. Initial focus is on typical development of young children, family systems, and the legislative issues affecting health and occupational performance of children and their families in this age range. Students will be exposed to professional philosophies and scope of practice outside of their own profession in order to gain understanding, respect, and the ability to work as an inter-disciplinary team. The hallmark of this course will be the development and implementation of an 8-10 week, 2 hour Transdisciplinary Playgroup for typical children, children with disabilities, and at-risk children. The Playgroup will also support parents/caretakers through a psychoeducation-based support group as part of family-centered care and relationship-focused early intervention. Health and human service professional students gain knowledge, experience, confidence, creativity, and communication through this academic and experiential course.
