Description:
-
This course integrates the health and human service professional into the transdisciplinary context of early intervention practice through play for children ages 18 months to 3 years. Initial focus is on typical development of young children, family systems, and the legislative issues affecting health and occupational performance of children and their families in this age range. Students will be exposed to professional philosophies and scope of practice outside of their own profession in order to gain understanding, respect, and the ability to work as an inter-disciplinary team. The hallmark of this course will be the development and implementation of an 8-10 week, 2 hour Transdisciplinary Playgroup for typical children, children with disabilities, and at-risk children. The Playgroup will also support parents/caretakers through a psychoeducation-based support group as part of family-centered care and relationship-focused early intervention. Health and human service professional students gain knowledge, experience, confidence, creativity, and communication through this academic and experiential course.
