    Prerequisite: VARTS 231Fulfills a course requirement in the Visual Arts Studies: SculptureCore ConcentrationThis course integrates students' understanding of materials andtechniques developed in Foundations and Intermediate Sculptureto create work that investigates a personal direction in Sculpture.Emphasis is placed on the students' conceptual and thematicintentions and how they take place in 3-Dimensional form.Innovation, an expanded vocabulary of traditions and new directionsin Sculpture, and depth of engagement with process, idea and formare expected. The relationship of site to space and inquiry into thenature of contemporary sculptural issues and forms will be examinedthrough making, field trips, and through readings about the historyand theory of sculpture.

    Prerequisite: VARTS 261Fulfills a course requirement in the Photography/ Digital MediaCore Concentration.This course builds on the ideas introduced in Foundations ofPhotography, strengthening the student's aesthetic strategies, technicalskills and historical knowledge of the medium. Ideas of representationand presentation, emphasizing solutions to visual, social andtheoretical concerns are explored. Film and lab-based, digital imaging,and technical photographic applications with media crossovers will beexplored.

Portfolios focus on content, processand innovation in the photographic image leading to articulate visualthinking and expressive picture making.

Emphasis is placed onlocating student interests and developing creative strategies. Projectsinclude digital images, web designs and videos.

    Prerequisite: VARTS 361 or permission of instructorFulfills a course requirement in the Visual Arts Studies Photography/DigitalMedia Core ConcentrationThis studio course introduces animation and video art processes andtools including stop-frame analog animation, digital animation, digitalvideography, sound design, editing and DVD/web publishing. Emphasisis placed on locating student interests, developing creative strategiesand honing professional methods. Projects include animation, soundand video creation. Students in this course organize and direct theannual Roger Williams University Film Festival.

    Prerequisite: VARTS 361 or 362Fulfills a course requirement in the Visual Arts Studies Film, Animation andVideo; and Photography / Digital Media Core ConcentrationsThis intermediate studio course focuses on advanced digitalphotography, advanced web design, and interactive installations.Students propose projects based on their own interests indigital media. Emphasis is placed on portfolio development andinterdisciplinary investigation that connects digital media to othermedias and disciplines.

Emphasis is placed on interdisciplinary experimentation,choreography, production management and the history and theory offilm, animation and video.     Prerequisites: VARTS 201, 281Fulfills a course requirement in the Visual Arts Studies: Painting/Drawing/Printmaking Core ConcentrationThe figure has been a subject of painting since prehistory. This courseexplores the insights and objectives artists have held in the pastwith regard to the figure. Furthermore, consideration of the figure'srole in the context of contemporary art and the student's personalinvestigation are fostered in this course.

    The Intersections program is a series of seminars mandatory toall Visual Arts Majors throughout their tenure at Roger WilliamsUniversity. Held weekly each semester, the program is intended tocreate a forum for discussion amongst students and faculty. Roundtableconversations or presentations by students, faculty and guestartists generate active and lively discussions surrounding issues inthe arts. A student mentor program, intended to build a sense ofcommunity among the visual arts students is a vital component of thisprogram. Required readings or screenings and topics covered will varysemester to semester.

    Prerequisite: VARTS 361This class investigates a variety of art making genres and technicalapplications that challenge form and content. Multi-mediaapplications may range from mixed media assemblage and digitalprocesses to alternative modes such as Collaboration, Performance Artor Installation Art. Students as individuals will adopt these ideas andmethods for their own work, continuing the development of formaland technical skills in relation to a personal evolution. Historicaland contemporary precedents will be introduced. Possibilities forcollaboration with other disciplines will be encouraged throughout thecourse.
