This is the first course in a two-course sequence aimed at developing practical outcomes and working skills in the operation of theatrical sound systems and the design and production of content. The major components within a typical sound system for either playback or reinforcement of a live event will be discussed and demonstrated. In addition, the physiology and psychoacoustics of human hearing and the basic elements of the physics of sound will be introduced and their impact on theatrical sound will be examined. A practical lab experience will be included as part of this course.

This is the second course in a two-course sequence. As such, it is focused on improving and enhancing the working skills begun in TST&D I, while exploring in greater depth the integration of both analog and digital technology into theatrical sound systems. Presentation and discussion of case studies will introduce the underlying principles of system design for either playback or reinforcement of a live theatrical event. Advanced techniques for producing effective content will be experienced through studio based projects. The final project will integrate skills in both content and system design with event analysis, technical drafting and knowledge of system components. A practical lab experience will be included as part of this course.

This course will include the study of dimming and control systems of lighting, with an emphasis on power distribution, low voltage control, operation and trouble-shooting. There will also be training in the use of temporary and permanent systems, temporary systems planning and rigging, shop orders and special effects. Class requires permission of instructor.

This course will include the study of new lighting technology devices and how they function and can be used. This will also include the integration of these devices within conventional systems and training in analog and digital data, and advanced data distribution. Permission of instructor.

Intended for sound designers, stage managers and lighting designers, this class will teach fundamental/rudimentary music skills that will enable the theatre practitioner to follow operatic and musical theatre scores. The course will provide basic skills to support cueing, timing and calling of such productions and in communicating with directors and music directors using musical terms.

One semester introductory course in stage management for drama, opera, and musical theater. Emphasis on basic assistant stage management skills and professional etiquette. Also includes instruction on assembling a prompt book, costume & prop paperwork, scenic shift plots, deck crew paperwork.

First semester of a year long sequence emphasizing practical aspects of stage management including organizing auditions, scheduling, running rehearsals, tech, and performances, assembling a working prompt script, taking blocking notation, cueing, conducting production meetings, and calling the show.

This course covers basic scenic design skills and methods; and introduces topics in stage properties for the entertainment industry. Through lectures, practical application, and theoretical projects students will learn to analyze, research, produce and manage stage props.

Scenic Art I is a course for those beginning painting for the Theatre. Students will be made familiar with the tools and methods employed by the Scenic Artist in a professional scenic studio. Students will learn color mixing and terminology, the specifics involved in the execution of line work, how to build a composition using a figure/ground relationship, the painting techniques for establishing shape through the use of highlight and shadow, the reproduction of images by following a series of 7 steps, and the practical employment of these techniques on actual scenic units in production.
