Using sociological theories and concepts and case studies of several social movements, we will examine questions such as how ordinary people use social movements to exercise power, what strategies they use, how social movements are organized, how elites respond to social movements, and why some social movements succeed while others fail.

Beginning with the historical development of professions and factors that gave rise to the emergence and establishment of professions, the course examines the importance of educational institutions in training professionals; the changing profile of various professions, particularly traditionally-male professions with regard to gender and race/ethnicity; and specialization in professions and the subsequent internal stratification of professions. An in-depth examination of selected professions will be used to illustrate changes and trends.

The major goal of the course is to use demographic data to gain insight into why and how populations change, focusing on the interaction of mortality, fertility, migration, population structure, and population characteristics. We will also examine where and under what conditions population change has positive and negative consequences. Special emphasis will be placed on sociological analysis of the interrelationship between population characteristics and the social context within which population phenomenon occur.
