This course introduces students to the sociological study of social movements. Using sociological theories and concepts and case studies of several social movements, we will examine questions such as how ordinary people use social movements to exercise power, what strategies they use, how social movements are organized, how elites respond to social movements, and why some social movements succeed while others fail.
