This course provides an examination of professions and their role in modern society. Beginning with the historical development of professions and factors that gave rise to the emergence and establishment of professions, the course examines the importance of educational institutions in training professionals; the changing profile of various professions, particularly traditionally-male professions with regard to gender and race/ethnicity; and specialization in professions and the subsequent internal stratification of professions. An in-depth examination of selected professions will be used to illustrate changes and trends.
