This course will give students introductory knowledge and methodological skills for analyzing demographic data. The major goal of the course is to use demographic data to gain insight into why and how populations change, focusing on the interaction of mortality, fertility, migration, population structure, and population characteristics. We will also examine where and under what conditions population change has positive and negative consequences. Special emphasis will be placed on sociological analysis of the interrelationship between population characteristics and the social context within which population phenomenon occur.
