This course is designed to provide students the opportunity to apply their understanding of prior health information management course content in a supervised simulated/laboratory environment. Students will perform laboratory exercises relating to the master patient index, numbering and filing systems, chart assembly, quantitative and qualitative chart analysis, abstracting, medico-legal processing, retention, scanning and indexing documents for a hybrid medical record, and incomplete medical record processing. A tour of a health information management department will allow students to observe the workflow and processing of the above functions in an actual healthcare setting. Prerequisites: BSC 2094, HIM 1000, HIM 1222C, HIM 2211C, INP 2002. Corequisites: HIM 2013, HIM 2253, HIM 2261.

This course is a capstone course for the Health Information Management A.S. program in which students will complete a supervised professional practice experience in a health information management (HIM) department of a hospital and alternative health care setting. The student will review HIM workflow and perform advanced HIM functions in order to bridge the academics of HIM to current HIM workforce needs and responsibilities. Emphasis will be placed on records retrieval and retention, assembly, qualitative and quantitative record analysis, inpatient and outpatient coding, abstracting, statistical compiling and reporting of health care data, release of information, and use of specific HIM software applications. Prerequisites: BSC 2094C, ENC 1101, HIM 1000, HIM 1222C, HIM 2013, HIM 2211C, HIM 2253C, HIM 2261, HIM 2510, HIM 2940, HSC 1149, INP 2002, STA 2023, with grades of C or higher. Corequisites: HIM 2214, HIM 2283, HIM 2500.

This course will introduce students to the need for and benefits of regular physical activity by exploring healthful life style alternatives, attitudes, and different types of exercise. Students will develop and participate in a personal program of fitness and weight management including exercise for cardiorespiratory endurance, muscular strength, flexibility, and relaxation.

This course is scheduled for individual students who wish to explore topics not covered in the curriculum. The student and instructor will design a course of study (learning contract). Approval from the department chair is required prior to registration. This course may be taken three times for credit.

This course is designed to provide students the opportunity to apply classroom theory to practical, work-related applications. Students must complete at least one semester at Seminole Community College with a GPA of at least 2.5 and must receive approval from the Cooperative Education Coordinator prior to registration. Seminars may be required. Through various combinations and repetition of coop courses, it is possible to earn up to nine coop credits.

This introductory course provides an overview of the health professions and the health care delivery system. Topics include legal and ethical issues pertinent to the medical office, wellness promotion, disease prevention, infection control, discussion of major disease conditions including communicable diseases and mental disorders, theories of growth, development and personality, and coping with illness and death. Communication skills, which include basic medical terminology, teaching/learning and critical thinking/problem-solving skills are discussed. Other components include safety and security in the medical office, basic first aid, and minor emergency. Personal characteristics required for success as a professional health care worker are also considered. Lab fee required.

This introductory course provides an overview of the health professions and the health care delivery system. Other topics will include disease prevention and wellness promotion, guidelines for legal and ethical practice, and communication skills. Basic concepts of medical terminology, safety and security, and infection control will be presented. Students will be introduced to the use of computers in health care, including diagnostic and monitoring capabilities. Prerequisites: TABE reading and language with minimum scores of 10.0 or ENC 0011C and REA 0002C, both with grade of C or higher if entry test scores indicate need or ENC 1101 with grade of C or higher.
