This introductory course provides an overview of the health professions and the health care delivery system. Topics include legal and ethical issues pertinent to the medical office, wellness promotion, disease prevention, infection control, discussion of major disease conditions including communicable diseases and mental disorders, theories of growth, development and personality, and coping with illness and death. Communication skills, which include basic medical terminology, teaching/learning and critical thinking/problem-solving skills are discussed. Other components include safety and security in the medical office, basic first aid, and minor emergency. Personal characteristics required for success as a professional health care worker are also considered. Lab fee required.
