This course provides an overview of healthcare information systems with a concentration on computerized health information management (HIM) functions. Students will be introduced to common software applications utilized to perform HIM processes. Emerging technology issues in healthcare will be explored. Lab fee required. Prerequisite: CGS 2100C and HIM 1000 with grades of C or better. Corequisite: HIM 1222C.

This course will provide students with knowledge and understanding of the collection, computation, compilation, and presentation of internal and external reporting of statistical healthcare information in the following four categories: administrative, quality, utilization, and financial. Topics include the use and application of statistics in healthcare; commonly used healthcare utilization statistical computations; vital statistics; uniform reporting requirements; health information indices; databases and disease registries; Institutional Review Board processes and knowledge-based research methods. Prerequisites: CGS2100C, HIM1000, HIM2013, HIM2211C, HIM2261, HIM2253C, HIM2510, HIM2940, INP2002, STA2023, all with grades of C or higher. Corequisites: HIM2283C, HIM2500, HIM2943.

Students will develop skills in the use of the Physician's Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) and HCPCS coding system in ambulatory healthcare settings. Prerequisites: HIM 1222C and CGS 2100C.

This course examines the complex financial systems within today's healthcare environment and provides an understanding of the healthcare reimbursement methodologies including PPS, DRGs, APCs, ASC Groups and applicable state and federal regulations related to UB-92 claims processing and carriers requirements. It acquaints students with the billing procedures used in hospitals. Requirements for payers and Quality Improvement Organizations (QIO) are discussed and practiced. Introduction to regulatory compliance, revenue cycle and charge description master (CDM) maintenance. This course will help prepare the student to pursue a multifunctional career path in areas dealing with health information management and patient financial services in physician offices and or acute care facilities. Prerequisites: CGS 2100C, HIM 1000, HIM 1222C, and STA 2023. Corequisite: HIM 2253C.

This course serves as an introduction to healthcare reimbursement methodologies, claims processing (CMS-1500), insurance carrier requirements, and applicable state and federal regulations. It acquaints students with the billing procedures used in physician offices. Strong emphasis will be placed on regulatory compliance and auditing. The students will have the opportunity to apply their knowledge in a laboratory setting utilizing practice management/billing software. Lab fee required. Prerequisites: HIM 1000 and HIM 1222C with a minimum grade of C or better. Corequisite: HIM 2253C.

Advanced coding concepts related to hospital DRGs, case mix, and ASCs will be introduced. Regulatory changes and updates affecting coding and reimbursement will be discussed, including ICD-10. Quality and productivity will also be explained. The 3M Encoder and Reference software will be used to provide handson practice to assign ICD-9-CM and CPT codes to diagnoses and procedures from actual hospital ED, ambulatory surgery, and inpatient medical records. Lab fee required. Prerequisites: HIM 2253C and HIM 1222C.

This course is an introduction to the management of health information operations. Subjects of focus will be principles of human resources; planning and budgeting; orientation training and staffing of personnel; organizing work processes including ergonomics considerations, and evaluating and improving work performance. Prerequisites: HIM 1222C, HIM 2253C, HIM 2261and INP 2002. Corequisites: HIM 2214 and HIM 2283C.

This course develops an understanding of the quality management initiatives in health care including utilization review, case management, risk management, medical staff credentialing and peer review. The study of quality management in health care will be based upon the roles and influences of accrediting bodies, regulatory agencies, legislation, society and payers. Prerequisites: CGS 2100C and HIM 1000 and HIM 1222C and INP 2002 and STA 2023. Corequisites: HIM 2253C and HIM 2261.

This course is designed to study, synthesize and apply technologies used in healthcare documentation as well as to stimulate an awareness of related emerging technologies. Prerequisites: HIM 2034 and CGS 2100C.
