    1 Credit This course is the laboratory component for Clinical Procedures I. Students will perform clinical procedures introducing them to the medical assistant's role in the physician's office and laboratory. Pre/Co-requisite: BIO213/ BIO214, MAS121/ MAS115, or permission of instructor.

    3 Credits Utilizing CPT and ICD-9 Clinical Modification coding systems, students will develop a basic understanding of procedural and diagnostic coding. In addition, students will be able to process an insurance claim form adhering to legal restrictions. Students will develop an understanding of the specific requirements for managed care systems; Blue Cross/Blue Shield, Medicaid, Medicare, Champus, Champva, + Tricare, Workers' Compensation, third party insurance payers, and for "Maine specific" insurance carriers. Pre/Co-requisites: BIO214, MAS114, MAS116, MAS121 or permission of the instructor.

    3 Credits This course will cover the flow of information and introduce the roles and responsibilities in a medical office. The students will be able to process insurance claim forms, record patient information, and adhere to legal and regulatory considerations. Topics will include requirements for managed care systems policies and procedures, Blue Cross/Blue Shield, Medicaid, Medicare, Tricare, Workers Compensation, Disability, third-party insurance, and the principals of coding. Students will develop skills in solving insurance problems, accounts receivable, fee adjustments, collecting and processing fees, and inpatient and outpatient billing. Pre/Co-requisites: BIO214, MAS121, MAS211 or permission of instructor.

    3 Credits This course explores the principles and methodologies for providing patient care in the medical office. A special focus upon pharmacology including drug classification, effects of medications on body systems, mathematics and dosage calculations, and the correct administration of parenteral, oral, topical, rectal, otic, and nasal medications, and the performance of laboratory procedures in the physician's medical office. Pre/Co-requisites: BIO214/ BIO216, MAS115, MAS117, MAS121/ MAS217. MAS217 Advanced Clinical Lab 2 Credits This course is a competency-based laboratory experience. The student will be provided with practice in clinical skills performed by medical assistants. Pre/Co-requisites: BIO214/ BIO216, MAS115, MAS117, MAS121/ MAS215.

    3 Credits All Medical Office Management students will complete this course, Experiential Education, during the final semester of their program. Students will apply learned knowledge and skills in the work setting. Experiential Education placement will be in physician offices, clinics, and out-patient facilities. Pre/Co-requisites: Completed all general education electives and program core courses as applied to major with a minimum grade of "C." Must qualify for final semester.

    5 Credits This course allows the student to gain practical experience in providing clinical care to patients and performing administrative tasks that occur in a medical practice. Students will be placed in a primary site, a physician's office or rural health clinic for the bulk of their training. In addition, they will participate in two rotations where they will gain in-depth experience in hospital-based phlebotomy and patient assessment and education. Pre/Co-requisites: BIO214/BIO216, MAS116, MAS121, MAS215, MAS217, MAS114, MAS115, MAS211, MAS212, MAS217.

    3 Credits This course is intended for students who have good basic skills with arithmetic and little or no previous experience with algebra. The purpose of this course is to develop the algebra skills necessary for success in higher level mathematics courses. Topics will include order of operations, evaluating and simplifying variable expressions, first degree equations and inequalities, word problem applications, integer exponents, polynomials, and factoring. This course will not count toward the fulfillment of an associate degree's requirements.

    3 Credits This problem-solving approach to mathematics presents the student with a firm foundation in the math skills needed for success in our contemporary society. Interactive techniques will be used which emphasize critical thinking and developing strategies to solve math problems. Topics covered include problem solving, reasoning and logic, consumer math, measurement systems and geometry, set theory and counting principles, probability, and descriptive statistics. Prerequisite: Satisfactory performance on the placement test.

    3 Credits This course will provide students with the concepts, principles, and problem solving techniques and skills needed in diverse occupational fields. Interactive techniques will be used which emphasize an understanding of the topics followed by applications of math concepts using problem solving computations. Topics covered include the numbering system, percents, charts, tables and graphs, calculations in both S. I. (metric) and the English systems, algebraic operations, simple equations, ratio and proportions, fundamentals of plane geometry, angular measure, triangles, area and volume calculations of various geometric shapes, introduction to right angle trigonometry. Prerequisite: Satisfactory performance on the placement test.
