Administrative, professional and legal aspects, educational requirements, standards and regulations, issues related to credentialing, quality assurance concepts/procedures, and an overview of pharmaceutical operations in patient care services will be addressed. (3 credits, 45 contact hours) F The student learns the basic terminology, abbreviations and units, and appropriate weights and measures needed to perform pharmaceutical calculations. Apothecary, avoirdupois, metric and household systems are an essential component of this course. Review of calculations dealing with decimals, fractions, ratio and proportion, percentages, ratio strength, reducing and enlarging formulas, percent solutions, IV drip rates and dilution and concentration problems are presented. Pass with a C or better. Prerequisite: TABE - Math 11.

Topics include: pharmaceutical nomenclature and classifi cation, abbreviations, pronunciation, product identifi cation, storage and dispensing requirements, dosage forms, mechanisms of drug actions, interactions, indications and contra-indications, side effects, and routes/methods of administering therapeutic agents in various systems of the body. Topics include: collection and organization of patient data, order entry processes, medication distribution systems, inventory, prescription processing, labeling, billing, repackaging, fl oor stock and controlled substance distribution, pharmaceutical computer systems, utilization of drug information resources, and proper communications techniques. The purpose of this course is to prepare participants for PTNL 1940 Pharmacy Technician Internship I. Lab fee. Pass with a C or better. Prerequisites: PTN 1101, PTN 1102. Acceptance into a PTN program. Corequisites: PTN 1123, HSC 2149.

Topics include: record keeping, drug distribution systems, drug use review, hands-on automation, quality assurance, time studies, investigational medication studies, data retrieval from medical records, self-care monitoring equipment, compounding of nonsterile products, and drug information retrieval systems. (4 credits, 180 clinical hours) S Practical application of the basic pharmacy technician concepts and skills in an actual pharmacy setting, under the direct supervision of a registered pharmacist. Rotations may include experience in community based retail outlets, hospitals or medical centers, extendedcare or home healthcare agency facilities and drug information centers.
