The Reluctant Reader Pre: Co: Elect: Intermediate Grade Students (Grades 5-6) will increase their phonic skills, sight vocabulary and comprehension ability through a variety of lessons developed around meaningful literature. All of these skills and more will be addressed and you will discover how much fun reading can be. Employing small group instruction as well as individual in- class assignments, students will develop the necessary skills to make their "Learning to Read" stage blossom into a "Readng to Learn" stage Class limited to 12 students, agees 10-12.

Native American Crafts and Culture (6-8) Pre: Co: Who were the "Indians"? Through interactive projects and activities, we will get acquainted with the first inhabitants of our country whose rich culture continues to influence us. Listen to the wonderful sounds of flute and drum music, write your own legends, and design colorful, beaded jewelry. You will gain an appreciation for the true spirit of the Native American. A $10 materials fee must be paid to the instructor the first week.

Look for each child to bring home their own book, published by the class. Reading is fun! Come have fun with us. Class limited to 12 students, ages 5-7.

If you haven't taken part one, don't be afraid to jump right in here. In this course, we will begin to think of who we are and what we may grow to be through self-reflection and art projects. Make a ghost shirt, personal shield, sand painting, prayer stick and medicine bag. Write a poem or two for self expression. Learn to make Native American foods such as pemmican and nut buters. have fun and learn more about the Native American culture and yourself, as we create and learn together! Ages 9-14.

Student authors will improve and sharpen their skills, as they learn the processes of pre-writing, draft- ing, revising and editing. Among the types of books they will create are: Foldout, Person, Accordion, Step and Instant books. The authors and illustrators of classic children's books will serve as models and inspiration for our amateur writers. Subject areas such as science, social studies and social skills will be integrated into the writing workshop.
