Students research, write, and edit articles for the online school newspaper using multimedia techniques, such as photo slideshows, videos, animations, Flash-based presentations, and podcasts. Students research stories, synthesize and edit them, and prepare them for dissemination. Ethical and legal aspects of communication are also covered. This course may be taken a maximum of 4 times. This course focuses on the preparation of content for newsletters of all professions and special interests. Students will discuss news values in selecting and writing content, writing and editing techniques, and careers in newsletter journalism. This course focuses on copy editing and word skills for journalists. Students will practice applying Associated Press style rules to stories and improving sentence structure, spelling, and general grammar skills commonly found in news stories. This course is recommended for journalism students who wish to improve copy editing skills. Skills acquired will be useable in various job markets, including newsletter, newspaper, magazine, book, and online publishing. Transfer Credit: CSU

This course will provide a basic introduction to multimedia storytelling with a journalism emphasis. Techniques that will be explored include use of video, photos, audio, animation, and text to convey interactive news and feature stories through the World Wide Web and other electronic media.     Class hours: 1.0 Lecture/1.0 Laboratory Recommendation: JOUR 101 or RTV 152 or equivalent with a grade of Pass or "C" or higher. This course teaches the principles and practice of writing for audio podcasts emphasizing news and information. Short podcast shows will be developed in class. Current podcast shows will be analyzed and evaluated for structure. Students will learn microphone techniques, the use of audio, studio procedure, and how to develop appropriate content for a podcast show or newscast. Current technology and digital format will be utilized to produce individual podcasts. Transfer Credit: CSU

    Class hours: 3.0 Lecture Recommendation: PHOT 100 or equivalent with a grade of Pass or "C" or higher. This course deals with the photographer as a journalist, focusing on theory and practice in press and publications photography, with emphasis on using the camera as a reporting and communications tool. Covered are news and feature photography and photographic essays, including composition, impact, and creativity, for newspapers, magazines, Internet, and other mass communications media. Students must have access to a manually operable camera. This course is not open to students who are enrolled in or who have received credit in PHOT 130. Transfer Credit: CSU

    Class hours: 3.0 Lecture This class explores the basic theories and principles of communicating information and concepts. Emphasis is on techniques and methods, with attention given to identifying audiences, using public relations tools, planning public relations programs and campaigns, promoting favorable relations with various segments of the public, and dealing with problem solving. The effective use of public information, publicity, and advertising is covered. This course is not available for students who are enrolled in or have completed BA 157.
