    Class hours: 3.0 Lecture Recommendation: Satisfactory completion of the English Placement Process or ENGL 20 or equivalent with a grade of Pass or "C" or higher and satisfactory completion of the Reading Placement Process or READ 43 with a grade of Pass or "C" or higher. This course presents a general survey of the historical evolution of cultural, social, economic and political institutions and customs of the nations of Asia. The pre-19th Century sections of the course will emphasize institutions such as family, philosophies, religious viewpoints and life style.     Class hours: 3.0 Lecture This course will expand on subjects and themes introduced in the core history curriculum offerings. Each topic will focus on themes, perspectives and issues of special interest to students. The specific focus of a particular offering will be decided by the course instructor and announced in the Schedule of Classes. This course may be taken for a maximum of 2 times. In this course students study the patterns and processes of global change and international institutions in the post-World War II period. Students are introduced to an array of concepts and theoretical perspectives to understand the global conditions that act as catalysts to world problems and challenges. This course examines how the world community organizes its responses to serious international problems. Transfer Credit: CSU

    Class hours: 3.0 Independent Study A course to provide opportunity for individual research and field projects under the direction of a faculty member in a given department. With the guidance of the faculty member, students prepare and carry out a written learning agreement describing the purposes and outcomes of the project. Students should expect to meet with the supervising faculty member one to two hours each week for conferences. Credit is based upon the number of hours in the semester expected to complete the project (1 unit for 54 hours, 2 units for 108 hours). This course may be taken a maximum of 2 times. For selected disciplines, UC transfer credit may be possible after admission to a UC campus, pending review of appropriate course materials by UC staff. See a counselor for an explanation. By providing an overview of the dynamics and processes underlying the health profiles of Latinos/Latinas another underrepresented minorities in Los Angeles County, this class aims to transform the student's individual interest in health into a professional health career goal. Population projections, population characteristics, birth rates and outcomes, causes of death and death rates, patterns of reportable diseases, services utilization, patterns of immigration, health insurances, provider training, risk behaviors, and chronic diseases will be surveyed.     Class hours: 3.0 Lecture This course for allied health students will cover cardiopulmonary resuscitation and first aid techniques as specified by the American Red Cross. Topics will include one-and-two person CPR for infants, children, and adults; resuscitation with mask and bag-valve mask; automated external defibrillator (AED); and early intervention for wounds, burns, trauma and sudden illness. A Professional Rescuer CPR Card valid for one year and a Standard First Aid Certificate valid for three years will be earned with successful completion of the course. Transfer Credit: CSU

Course content includes daily nutrient requirements, life cycle needs, food selection and meal planning for health. Weight maintenance strategies and consumer information are included. This course is an introduction to basic principles of normal and therapeutic nutrition. Emphasis is placed on nutritional requirements and food selection in health and disease. Course content includes life cycle needs, weight maintenance strategies and discussion of common medical disorders and their relation to diet.
