An exploration of the growth, expansion, and influence of Christianity in the United States from the colonial period to the present. The doctrinal, institutional, ethical, and devotional expressions of American Christianity will be addressed. The interaction between Christianity and other religious groups in American culture will also be examined. Prerequisites: HI 221 and 222 or RL 361. Credit three hours. (Fee $7)

Professor and student will discuss how scholars, churchmen, laypersons, and others have viewed the meaning of history - particularly in the formulation of theories for the rise and fall of civilizations - and how God has worked above, in, or below in the recorded lives and events of the past. Emphasis will be given to progressively exploring each theory and how these either mesh with or contradict the main currents of Philosophies of History from the Christian Worldview. Prerequisite: junior or senior standing. Credit three hours. (Fee $7)

This course will examine the vaerious methodologies of historical research and writing, i.e., how historians actually practice the craft of history in reading, research, writing, and teaching. It is intended as a primer in the nuts and bolts of the profession, as well as a course in the general art and craft of turning a thesis statement into a publishable work. Submission of a short research paper, commonly known as a Senior Thesis, is required, as is an in-class oral defense. This course is the second of two capstone graduation requirements for all history majors. Prerequisite:HI481 for history majors or instructor's permission for non-majors. Credit three hours. (Fee $7)
