This course provides an overview of the case management process, community resources and services available, and financial resources available for rehabilitation services. Students will develop the competencies necessary to provide timely, cost effective, and efficient services. They will examine the organizational structure of public rehabilitation programs and non-profit service delivery systems.

Students will analyze and use the principles and theories of testing, assessment and evaluation. Specific topics will include types of tests, work samples, situational assessments to assess developmental variables, vocational skills, functional and physical capacities and personality characteristics. Students are required to attend a lab. Interpretation of assessment results and report writing will be an integral part of the course.

Students will learn to provide services and interventions under the guidelines and regulations of the Code of Professional Ethics for Certified Rehabilitation Counselors as adopted by the Commission of Rehabilitation Counselor Certification. This course will examine societal issues, trends, and developments, the cultural impact of disabilities on families, and multicultural counseling issues, gender issues and family counseling practices. Components of self-awareness, culture-specific knowledge, and skills as they pertain to counseling members of diverse and under-represented populations will be examined and practiced.

Prerequisite: Completion of one semester (12 hours) of Rehabilitation Counseling course work, or permission of instructor/advisor. Application for approval of the Practicum site occurs in the semester prior to enrollment in this course and is facilitated by the Practicum instructor, and the student's advisor. This course provides a supervised experience in a rehabilitation setting and an opportunity for the student to explore a specialization in the rehabilitation field. The course requires a minimum of 100 clock hours within the work setting and a weekly supervision meeting with the instructor.

This course is the second supervised field experience for the counseling student. Students are able to continue their training in the same area or select a different area of rehabilitation to further enhance their training. This course requires a minimum of 300 clock hours within the work setting with a weekly supervision meeting with the instructor..

This course will provide students with the skills necessary to counsel and provide direct services to individuals who have, or have had, substance abuse (alcohol, drugs, inhalants, prescription medication, etc.) problems and/or to their family members. Students will learn about addiction issues and will develop the skills necessary to work effectively with this population. Students will also be exposed to the legal and ethical issues related to this at-risk population.

An examination of issues and skills involved in assisting clients to deal with crisis situations. The progression and symptomatology of crisis functioning are presented with models and techniques for appropriate psychological, educational, and specialized intervention techniques for use with clients.

This third field work experience allows the student the option of continuing in the same area or selecting an additional area of specialization. Students are given the opportunity to become generalists in the field of rehabilitation or specialize in one specific area of rehabilitation. This course requires a minimum of 300 clock hours within the work setting with a weekly supervision meeting with the instructor.

This course is designed to introduce graduate students to statistics, its methods and techniques. Course goals and objectives will focus on the skills and knowledge needed to critically use statistics in basic research, program evaluation, assessment, and licensure and certification activities. This course will provide the basis for the statistics necessary for those students who will be completing a thesis.

Group counseling theories, practices and interventions will be examined. Students will understand the role of group work within various rehabilitation settings and how to apply group principles and techniques in their work with clients. Basic family dynamics and the effects disability can have on that system will also be explored. Students will be required to participate in a lab experience where they will learn and utilize principles of group dynamics, communication, processes, stages and goals, leadership, democratic group procedures, individual and group resistance and initiation and development of small groups.
