[2] This course introduces students to terms and concepts used in an analytical examination of public school education in the United States. Students examine the practical and philosophical issues that characterize the discipline of music education. Laboratory fee.

Students spend two weeks during Winterterm (January break) in an elementary school assisting a music teacher. This experience enables students, early in their four-year program, to develop an understanding of what is involved in the many aspects of a career in elementary music teaching. Prerequisite: MED 110. Laboratory fee.

Students spend two weeks during Winterterm (January break) in a high school assisting a music teacher. This experience enables students, early in their four-year program, to develop an understanding of what is involved in the many aspects of a career in middle school or high school music teaching. Prerequisite: MED 150. Laboratory fee.

This course teaches basic principles for teaching elementary instrumental music. Emphasis is placed on teaching skills, methods, appropriate techniques, rehearsal techniques, curriculum development, instrumental executive skills, and visual/aural skills development for the elementary instrumental setting. Prerequisites: MEA 102, MEA 200, MEA 201, MEA 300, MEA 303, CON 314, CON 316, and sophomore proficiency.

Emphasis is placed on teaching skills, methods, appropriate techniques, rehearsal techniques, curriculum development, and visual/aural skills development for the secondary instrumental setting. Prerequisites: MEA 102, MEA 200, MEA 300, MEA 303, CON 314, CON 316, and sophomore proficiency.

A course in the musical skills and methods needed to develop a sequential elective choral program from the middle school through the high school. Rehearsal techniques, laboratory experience in choral conducting, repertoire, piano accompaniment skills, school observations, leadership, planning, and administrative needs are among the topics covered. Four hours weekly. Prerequisite: Successful completion of sophomore evaluation. Spring semester only.

For music education instrumental emphasis majors only. The course integrates directly the topics presented with laboratory experience using those specific teaching techniques. This integration of the theoretical with the practical enables students to become more realistically involved in the teaching/learning process. Students teach other students of the class, all of whom play instruments learned in the instrumental methods class, as opposed to playing their major instrument. Such an atmosphere of beginners approximates a public school situation. Four hours weekly. Prerequisites: MEA 102, 200, 201, and successful completion of sophomore evaluation. Spring semester only.

Presents psychological principles, techniques, and materials designed to develop teaching skills appropriate to the developmental musical abilities of children in grades N-2. Three hours weekly. Prerequisites: MED 110 and successful completion of sophomore evaluation. Laboratory fee. Spring semester.
