Functions and their graphs, successive approximation and limits, local linearity and differ en tia tion, applications of differentiation to graphing and optimization, the definite integral, antiderivitives, and differential equations. Prerequisite: permission based on Mathematics Placement Examination.

Riemann sums and the definite integral; techniques of integration, with particular emphasis on numerical integration; multivariable functions, partial derivatives, and multiple integrals; introduction to vectors. Prerequisite: MATH 121, or MATH 119, or permission.

    Fall (1). Practice in the mathematical area of problem solving in preparation for the Putnam Examination. Material and problems chosen from prior Putnam Exams, Mathematics Olympiads and other sources, and from across mathematics, including basic strategies, combinatorics, geometry, induction, series, number theory, algebra, and calculus. Prerequisite: permission of the instructor. CN only.

    Fall (2-4), Spring (2-4), May Term (2-3) This individualized study option provides majors with opportunities to design their own courses and to work closely with faculty on a one-on-one basis. The directed study may be disciplinary, interdisciplinary, or from areas outside the current liberal studies curriculum. CN or EV only.

Prerequisite: second-semester freshman standing or higher, fingerprint clearance, and TB test. Corequisite: enrollment in PE 310E or a course in the arts.
