(Prerequisite: None) This course provides the student with a broad knowledge base to design programs for children from birth to five developing both typically and atypically. The course provides a foundation for: establishing and maintaining a safe, healthy learning environment; promoting physical and intellectual competence; supporting emotional and social development; providing positive guidance; establishing positive, productive relationships with parents; ensuring a well-run, purposeful program responsive to children's needs; and maintaining a personal commitment to continuing education and professionalism. The student will also gain knowledge of state and federal laws pertaining to the care and education of young children. Course content is based on the guidelines established by the Council for Early Childhood Professional Recognition and partially fulfills the theoretical component of the Certified Development Associate credential.

(Prerequisite: Acceptance into ECDT Fast Track) Mathematics for ECDT I (Equivalent to MATH 1013 Elementary Algebra) is an elementary algebra-level course designed for those students planning to enter the childcare field. The course covers basic topics in arithmetic and algebra using contextualized resources from the early childhood field. This course also satisfies the prerequisites for ECDT 1143 Mathematics for ECDT II and MATH 1023 Intermediate Algebra. Note: This course is designed not only to prepare the student with the mathematical foundation for an early childhood curriculum but to also prepare them for College Algebra. Problem solving strategies, technology, activities, and manipulatives will be integrated throughout the course. This is a fast track course that meets daily (Monday - Thursday) for 8-weeks. This course is non-transferable.

(Prerequisite: Acceptance into ECDT Fast Track and a grade of "C" or better in ECDT1123 Mathematics for ECDT I) Mathematics for ECDT II (Equivalent to MATH 1023 Intermediate Algebra) is a continuation of ECDT 1123 Mathematics for ECDT I (MATH 1013 Elementary Algebra). This course covers the following math concepts as they relate to the early childhood profession: fundamental operations of real number systems, factoring, equations, functions and graphs, exponents, radicals, and logarithms. Note: This course is designed not only to prepare the student with the mathematical foundation for an early childhood curriculum but also to prepare them for college algebra. Problem solving strategies, technology, activities, and manipulatives will be integrated throughout the course. This is a fast track course that meets daily (Monday - Thursday) for 8- weeks. This course is non-transferable.

(Prerequisite: Acceptance into ECDT Fast Track. Co-requisite: ECDT 1153 Developmental Reading for ECDT, if required.) Writing for ECDT (Equivalent to ENGL 1013 Basic English) is a basic English-level course with emphasis placed on sentence construction. Students review the parts of speech, learn to recognize and eliminate sentence errors, punctuate sentences appropriately, and use mechanics correctly, depending on the writing task. The course is designed to improve students' ability to write clear, effective communications at the college level. The course uses contextualized resources from the early childhood profession to enhance the development of basic writing skills. Students who make at least a "C" in ECDT 1143 Writing for ECDT havesatisfied the prerequisite for ENGL 1113 Fundamentals of Writing. This course is nontransferable.

(Prerequisite: Acceptance into ECDT Fast Track) Developmental Reading for ECDT (Equivalent to READ 1213 Developmental Reading) introduces ECDT majors to early childhood concepts through instruction in reading and vocabulary development. Word attack skills are used to cover content related to early childhood. Basic levels of comprehension and application are stressed. Techniques in surveying, skimming, and scanning are incorporated. Developmental Reading for ECDT satisfies the requirement for READ 1213 Developmental Reading. This course is non-transferable.

(Prerequisite: None) This course prepares preschool teachers for using art as a teaching tool through providing opportunities to plan and develop art activities that are developmentally appropriate. Lab experiences are implemented during ECDT 2916 Early Childhood Practicum.

(Prerequisite: None) This course covers skills needed by preschool teachers in order to plan, develop, and present language arts activities that nurture expressive language in young children. These skills are used to help children develop pre-reading and pre-writing skills.

(Prerequisite: None) This course focuses on music as a teaching tool for the preschool teacher. Students will use creative thinking, self-awareness, and problem solving as they plan developmentally appropriate musical activities to promote instructional themes such as: health and safety, socialization, family relationships, and nutrition.

(Prerequisite: ECDT 1113 Essential Elements of Child Care, EDUC 1102 Early Childhood Field Experience, and EDUC 1103 Introduction to Early Childhood Education) This course covers the principles and application of safety, sanitation, and health nutritional practices for young children. Focus is on creating a safe environment, providing healthy nutritious foods, and making young children aware of the importance of these factors for good health and safe living.

(Prerequisite: EDUC 1103 Introduction to Early Childhood Education, ECDT 1113 Essential Elements of Child Care; Prerequisite or Co-requisite: EDUC 2333 Child Growth and Development) This course focuses on the emotional development and social behavior of preschool children developing typically and atypically. Students will gain knowledge about identifying children with developmental disabilities, handicapping conditions, or challenging behaviors. Students will discover how to implement quality programs designed to accommodate the needs of normally developing and exceptional children.
