3 credits (3 + 0) An examination of the application of the western justice system to remote Alaska villages including issues that arise from cultural conflicts, difficulties associated with a centralized justice system servicing remote communities off the road system, the Federal/Indian or Native Alaskan relationship, and a description of criminal behavior occurring in the villages. Exposure to alcohol and substance related issues. These include Tribal justice-related solutions, local options laws, and other efforts to curb the negative aspects of alcohol and substance abuse in rural Alaska.

Included are an introduction to the historical foundation to current investigative techniques including the methods, principles, and technology involved in current investigation. Fingerprints, DNA and other modern crime scene technology are examined and explored. The CSI effect on current police investigative practices and the overall effect on policing will also be introduced. Prerequisite: JUST S110.
