Techniques for history taking, comprehensive techniques of physical examination with emphasis on competent decision making based on the evaluation, assessment of mental status and general scene survey. Special considerations for field assessment and assessment based management. Comprehensive overview of diverse medical emergency situations including pulmonary, neurological and cardiac with emphasis on anatomy and physiology and ECG acquisition and interpretation of the cardiac patient. Also includes neurology, endocrinology, allergies and anaphylaxis, gastroenterology, urology and nephrology, toxicology, environmental emergencies, psychiatric behavioral disorders, and gynecology. Trauma care systems and the role of the paramedic. Includes blunt and penetrating trauma, hemorrhage and shock, soft tissue trauma and burns with special considerations for trauma involving musculoskeletal system, spine, thorax, abdomen and the head, face and neck. Emphasis on writing complete, correct sentences and unified, coherent, well-developed paragraphs. Short essays and selected readings assigned. Students build skills through pre-writing, drafting, revising, and editing. In-class and out-of-class essays required. Prerequisite: Recommending score on the College writing skills placement test for ENGL 097.
