This course is an analysis of effective management strategies and the body of knowledge associated with pursuing a career in sports management. Fundamental sports management principles and key skills as well as information on current issues are emphasized. The course introduces students to sports management career opportunities and to sports principles as they will introduce student to leadership style, communication and motivation. 3 credits.

This class is designed to be a survey of the legal issues associated with what is commonly referred to as Sports Law. Law affecting a range of sports-related activities are examined including the following: application of contract law to sports relationships, stand form contracts in sports; the doctrine of restraint of trade; competition law as applied to sports; internal regulation of sports, including topics such as discipline, natural justice and rights of atheletes; civil and criminal ability arising from participation in and management of sport; the internationalization of sports law; and dispute resolution in sport. 3 credits.

Sport Marketing is the application of promotion and marketing in college/high school athletics, professional sports, corporate fitness clubs and resorts. This course which is taught partially online and partically in the classroom provides an overview of law as it affects sports-related activities, as well as careers in sports in which knowledge of the current laws affecting the different sports is needed in which to compete in this relatively new and exciting field. Topics that will be covered include but are not limited to: strategic marketing management, studies of sports consumers, data-based marketing and the role of research in sport marketing, electronic media, coordinating and controlling the marketing mix, and the legals aspects of sport marketing. 3 credits.

This is an introducation to the management of amateur athletics, including a review of organizational structures in regards to intercollegiate athletic departments, conferences, and the NCAA. Analysis of the organization and management of international sport, including the European "Club" structure and Olympic movements, as the Global Sport Industry expands. 3 credits.

A systematic inquiry into the effectiveness of personnel policies and practices. Emphasis placed on the recruitment, selection, allocation and development of human resources. The course continues the development of an understanding into the ethical, legal and political issues that affect contemporary human resource practices. The student gains an understanding of human resource management of a culturally diverse population as a responsibility of all managers. Prerequisite: BU313. 3 credits.

Provides an examination and understanding of major concepts, theories and functions of compensation development. Identifies internal, external and individual equity; job evaluation methods and wage surveys; applies laws that regulate compensation; recognizes trends in variable compensation approaches; becomes aware of employee benefits and related issues in indirect compensation and demonstrates knowledge of compensation benefit issues in case studies. Prerequisite: BU313; BU411. 3 credits.
