Study of appropriate educational interventions, curriculum framework, and strategies for students with a cognitive impairment (called intellectual disability in the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act) as well as academic, social, and community issues. Includes professional skills related to collaboration with other stakeholders in programming for students with a cognitive impairment. Prerequisites: Declaration of special education major. The application of the theoretical principles that are the foundation of teaching practices for students with emotional and behavioral disorders. Research based teaching practices are applied through class assignments that involve student field placements, field interviews, data collection and direct observation. Prerequisites: Declaration of special education major and a B- or better required in the following: EDS 205, EDS 305, EDS 306, and EDS 332.

An in-depth exploration of students who have emotional/behavioral disorders and the strategies used to teach and support them. Course content includes assessment, creation of learning environments fostering mental health and academic success and development of behavior management programs that span school and community settings. This course consists of the study of curricula used for different levels of instruction as well as behavioral interventions for students with an emotional impairment. This includes identifying materials appropriate for remedial activities, lesson planning and instructional techniques. Prerequisite: Declaration of special education major. This course examines specific learning disability (SLD) and the associated conditions of dyslexia, dysgraphia, and dyscalculia. The impact of SLD on children, adolescents, adults, and families is studied. Policies and procedures for identifying individuals with SLD and evidence-based practices for supporting their transition to post-secondary education and employment are emphasized. Offered fall semester. Prerequisites: Declaration of special education major and B- or better in the following: EDS 205, EDS 305, EDS 306, and EDS 332.

The directed teaching experience provides students the opportunity to implement the knowledge, skills, and best practices learned in their coursework related to teaching young children with special needs in an early childhood setting that serves infants/toddlers, preschoolers, or K-3 students. It meets requirements set by the state and accrediting agencies. Offered winter semester. Prerequisite: Completion of 15 credits toward the early childhood minor, including EDS 214. 7.00 Credits
Student teaching in a classroom with students who have cognitive impairments. Accompanying seminars on methods of teaching and the organization and development of curriculum for students with cognitive impairments. Offered winter semester. Prerequisites: Successful completion of prior coursework and positive recommendations from prior fieldwork. Corequisite: EDS 441. Students must earn a minimum grade of B- to pass this field experience. In the event that a student is removed from EDS 471, withdrawal from EDS 441 is required. Students must follow the holiday break schedule designated by the K-12 district for their school placement/assignment, not the GVSU break schedule.

Students must follow the holiday break schedule designated by the K-12 district for their school placement/assignment, not the GVSU break schedule.
