    This course is for students seeking dual endorsement in elementary and special education and provides educators with the necessary foundations, strategies, and understanding to successfully modify and provide curriculum adaptations within the learning environment for the special needs of exceptional students. Course work and class activities will include topics on classroom arrangements, adaptive equipment, grouping, scheduling, homework materials selection, classroom management accommodations, effective delivery, and adaptation of subject content, as well as ways to direct students to areas of social competence and self-determination. In addition, students will investigate various instructional methods and strategies considered effective with different areas of exceptionality, including: mental retardation, learning disabilities, behavior and emotional disorders, communication disorders, hearing impaired, visually impaired, physically disabled, health impaired, and gifted and talented.

    This course is a foundation course for the Bachelor of Arts in Education Alternative Routes Dual Endorsement (Special Education and Elementary Education) program. The focus of this course is to provide an understanding of curriculum modifications and adaptations for special needs students. EDE/SPED 402B is the second of two courses on modifications and adaptations. This course focuses on a performance task that allows the candidate to demonstrate competency in a professional setting.

    This course, the first of two courses examining teaming and collaboration examines methods candidates use in creating collaborative relationships with other educators in the public school setting, developing family members as part of the team, and working with schools/agencies for successful transitions. Candidates examine techniques for supervising para-professionals to create positive team relationships. The course examines strategies for successful transitions between school settings, skills for secondary students including schoolto- work, transition planning, and meeting the diverse needs of all students.

    This course describes the performance tasks to demonstrate competency in designing and managing collaborative relationships with educators in the public school setting and working with schools/agencies for successful transitions. Candidates demonstrate their ability to supervise para-professionals and communicate strategies for successful transitions between school settings. It is the companion course to EDE/SPED 403A, a required course in the alternative route to certification with endorsements in K-8 elementary and K-12 special education.

    In this course, candidates will explore the skills involved in literacy development. Reading and writing skills will be discussed in relationship to language development, the social and cultural contexts of literacy, construction of meaning, and the six strands (reading, writing, speaking, listening, viewing, and representing visually) of literacy. Philosophies of literacy development will be examined in relationship to best practices in teaching and learning. Candidates will examine knowledge, skills, and attitudes present in proficient readers and writers. Included in this course is a study of the conditions of learning that foster first and second language acquisition.

    This course provides candidates seeking an alternative route to certification with a dual endorsement in Elementary Education and Special Education experiences in instructional strategies for teaching literacy skills. This course introduces students to strategies in teaching the literacy skills composed of six interrelated processes or strands (reading, writing, listening, speaking, viewing, and representing visually). Students learn models for doing guided reading and independent reading; strategies to develop an effective learning environment; and methods to teach the strategies a good reader uses to maintain comprehension. The roles of continuous assessments before, during, and after reading is introduced.

Candidates apply knowledge and skills involved in the six interrelated processes or strands (reading, writing, listening, speaking, viewing, and representing visually) of literacy. Candidates apply guided reading and independent reading; apply strategies to develop an effective learning environment; and apply the strategies a good reader uses to maintain comprehension. Candidates apply continuous assessments before, during, and after reading to inform instructional practices.

    This course provides candidates seeking an alternative route to certification with a dual endorsement in Elementary Education and Special Education endorsement. This course provides candidates with specific strategies for instructing and assisting special needs students as they acquire literacy skills. Discussions also focus on the impact of cultural differences and diversity in the classroom. Candidates learn to use assessments before, during, and after teaching to guide instruction for diverse learners. Technology is explored to foster flexible learning opportunities and the reinforcement of skills. Moral and cultural values reflected in children's literature are explored.

    This course is for candidates seeking an alternative route to certification with dual endorsements in elementary education and special education. The focus is on the integration of the creative arts (music, visual arts, drama, creative movement, and dance) into the K-8 classrooms. Candidates are introduced to the basic elements, principles, related concepts, and vocabulary of the creative arts. They learn to apply the district and state guidelines for the creative arts curriculum and to design lessons that integrate creative arts concepts with other curricula. The course expands the participant's appreciation of creative arts methods that may be applied to specific classroom instruction. Visual arts received a particular emphasis.

    This is the performance-based companion course to EDE/SPED 411A for candidates seeking an alternative route to certification with dual endorsements in elementary education and special education. The focus is on the integration of the creative arts into the K-8 and special education classroom. Candidates apply elements, principles, related concepts, and vocabulary of the creative arts, as well as district and state guidelines for the creative arts, to an integrated unit plan they intend to teach.
