This course introduces students to proper turf and golf-course management technique, including daily expectations and proper protocol while working on a golf course. Students become familiar with the profession, relevant etiquette, and gain hands-on experience on a variety of equipment. This course represents the first internship requirement for the Golf Course Management - Professional and Clubhouse Manager tracks. This course will be completed at a recognized intership site previously chosen in conjunction with the faculty. It builds upon the information and skills learned in the prerequisite course GMBA 181, and provides students with a unique professional educational experiance by combining theoretical and hands-on training. Students must spend a minimum of 180 hours (6 weeks) at an internship site to satisfactorily complete this requirement. HOWEVER, it should be noted that most internship cooperative sites require student interns to commit to employment from mid-May to late August. This course examines the responsibilities of personnel managers and managers who perform the human-resource management functions in golf courses, recreation/sports, or veterinary/lab-animal facilities. Course content includes: work analysis, staffing, training and development, appraisal, compensation, maintenance, union relations, communication, motivation, and legislation. This course represents the second of four professional/internship experiences (two internships and two professional work experiences) that students in the Golf Course Management (B.B.A.) Superintendent program are required to complete in order to graduate. It builds upon the first internship experience, TURF/GMBA 181/182, and upon the information learned in the classroom. This course is designed to maintain and enhance the hands-on skills acquired during the previous internship, and keep students prepared for upcoming work experiences and internships. Students will be encouraged to explore different types of facilities than they have experienced in the past in order to build a varied experiance and hopefully be exposed to different maintenance and management techniques. This course will be completed at an approved site. Students must complete a minimum of 320 hours (full-time employment) to fulfill the requirements of This course. Note that most employers will expect students to work from mid-May until the end of August. This course deals with the managerial aspects of a golf course from the perspective of the manager or management team. Emphasis is on the identification of functions needing management, identification of outcomes required by owners or regulatory agencies, development of an appropriate managerial style, creation of a strategic organizational plan, and implementation of a plan within a multifaceted organization. As a research project, students choose a hypothetical golf course of a particular size and location and develop the outline of a strategic plan that would serve as the guiding document for the management team.
