This seminar will acquaint the student with faculty, the teacher education program, and assess speaking and writing skills.

2.00 Credits
This course introduces the teacher candidate to the education profession. Course content includes professional competencies and dispositions, the ethical dimension of teaching, current issues in education, and the College of Education and Leadership's conceptual framework including the exemplars of quality teaching. Classroom observations, case studies, and service learning are integral course components. Utilization of library resources and technology is an expected requirement. By the conclusion of this course, the candidate will have an in-depth understanding of the profession, of the teacher preparation program and the portfolio assessment process.

Provides the teacher candidate with an opportunity to act as an aide to the teacher in a variety of tasks at different levels and in different content fields, in a variety of socioeconomic, cultural, and racial settings and in schools following different organizational patterns. Opportunities will be provided to examine attitudes and feelings about the issues of racism, sexism, prejudice, and discrimination. Must be taken concurrently with ED 204. Prerequisite: ED 100, 102, 2 of 3 PPST passed, Sophomore standing.

This course is designed to acquaint the teacher candidate with basic instructional teaching methods, curriculum tools, behavioral objectives, and the elements of lesson design. The course will include learning theories, cognitive research, the Cardinal Stritch University Foundational Lesson Plan Model (RIO format), collaboration and an instructional unit. Students must register concurrently for ED 200. Prerequisite: ED 100, 102, 2 of 3 PPST passed, Sophomore standing.

This course will address the knowledge, skills and understandings that are required in order for teachers to work effectively with cultural diversity that is found in the classroom. In addition, the philosophy and history of education is addressed. Prerequisite: ED 100.

1.00 Credits
In this class students will be provided guidance and support as they compile their first level of Portfolio. This benchmark course assesses whether or not students are ready to move into the professional sequence of coursework related to teaching. Students who successfully pass Portfolio I are officially accepted into the teacher preparation program. Prerequisite: ED 100, 102, 200, 204, 3 of 3 PPST passed, B- or better in EN 101, 102, and CA 101, and GPA of 2.75 or better in education courses and overall.

2.00 Credits
This course is designed to explore and practice the skills necessary to develop and implement a developmentally appropriate curriculum, assess the young child and develop a community of learners by using various management models. Prerequisite: ED 304.

3.00 Credits
This course is designed to create competencies in mathematics methods for students preparing to teach in the K-8 classroom. Through reading, writing, discussion, and hands-on activities students will develop the skills to successfully create mathematics activities for various grade levels. Assessment practices as well as NCTM and State Math standards will be central to the course. Prerequisite: ED 304.

This course is designed to create competencies in the methods of teaching science for students preparing to teach in the K-8 classroom. Through a hands-on approach students will develop the skills to successfully create and implement science lessons appropriate for various grade levels based on state and national academic standards. Health methods will also be addressed. Prerequisite: ED 304.

3.00 Credits
This course is designed to explore and practice the skills necessary to fulfill the role of teacher of ELMS social studies. Focus areas will be curriculum development; component areas of broad field social studies; development of social studies lessons, assessments, and units; instructional methods specific to social studies; textbook evaluation; and the relationship of social studies to all other subject areas. The Wisconsin K-12 Academic Standards in Social Studies will be a focus. Prerequisite: ED 304.
