Includes the history of general and special education in North America, deinstitutionalization, mainstreaming and inclusion of individuals with disabilities in society and public school systems, legislative initiatives since the 1960s that mandate the provision of a free, appropriate, public education (FAPE) to students with special needs, Oregon's 21st Century School Act, Oregon common curriculum goals, standards and benchmarks, and professional organizations and agencies to serve students from diverse backgrounds.
