    5 semester hours Prerequisite: acceptance into the Physician Assistant Program This course will introduce the student to the principles of medicine. The focus will be on adult disorders, both medical and surgical. The course content includes: etiology, pathophysiology, clinical presentation, diagnostic workup, and management of the disorder. Adult Medicine I and Pathophysiology is designed to introduce the student to common disease entities within the various medical specialty areas. Attention is given to other diseases which, although less common, may, present as medical emergencies. Through a series of modules or sections, lectures will be presented on the pathophysiology and clinical approach to various system disorders.

    5 semester hours Prerequisites: "C" or better in previous semester courses This course is a continuation of PHAS 374. The diagnosis and management of the most common clinical problems seen by primary care practitioners is covered. This course includes typical clinical presentation, etiology, pathophysiology, diagnostic workup, and management of these disorders.

    4 semester hours Prerequisite: acceptance into the Physician Assistant Program The course provides the opportunity and environment for the student to learn and develop essential and effective interviewing and communication skills necessary for the physician assistant to perform a competent medical interview and assessment, to elicit a comprehensive health history, and to record and accurately present the gathered information in the proper format. It also provides instruction and demonstration in the principles and practical skills required to perform a comprehensive physical examination, to recognize normal findings, and describe the findings. Instructional methods and and activities in the course include lecture, demonstrations, video vignettes, oral case presentations, and weekly physical examination skills laboratory sessions.

    4 semester hours Prerequisite: PHAS 380 This course is a continuation of PHAS 380 and provides instruction and demonstration in the principle and practical skills required to perform a comprehensive physical examination, to recognize formal findings, and to describe the findings. The student will also learn the physical examination maneuvers and special skills necessary to complete a thorough assessment of common specialty examinations. Lectures, demonstrations, and videos will facilitate the classroom teaching.

    2 semester hours Prerequisite: admission into the professional component of the Physician Assistant Program or permission of the instructor and/or program director This course will use demonstrations and practice in the skills relating to the primary care of the patient. The skills will be taught in conjunction with adult medicine topics over the expanse of the curriculum to ensure further understanding as it relates to a variety of disease management and organ systems. These may include wound care, suturing, minor surgery, and orthopedic procedures such as splinting and stabilization pending referral from the perspective of the primary care, office-based PA practitioner.

    2 semester hours Prerequisite: admission into the professional component of the Physician Assistant Program or permission of the instructor and/or program director This course is a continuation of PHAS 390. The course will teach common office practice procedures, including suturing, injections, urinary and intravenous catheterization, aseptic technique, wound care and splinting, and casting techniques. Instruction will also be provided on indications, contraindications, and complications associated with the procedures involved.

    1 to 4 semester hour(s) Prerequisite: acceptance into the professional component of the Physician Assistant Program This course is for students in the professional phase of the Physician Assistant Program. An independent study to secure an in-depth background in an area of medicine or surgery that holds special interest to the student. May be repeated if the topic is different.

    1 semester hour Prerequisite: successful entry into Year II of Physician Assistant Program This course is designed to prepare the senior student for the transition from the role of a PA student to a practicing PA in the medical community. The course will provide guidelines for preparing the student for employment, including résumé writing, developing the professional portfolio, job interviewing, andnegotiating contracts. Continuous lifelong learning, professional conduct, PA Code of Ethics, and responsibilities to professional organizations will be reinforced. Guidance will be provided for the pursuit of postgraduate PA training programs, PA residency programs, and advanced academic degrees.

    1 semester hour Prerequisite: successful entry into Year II of Physician Assistant Program The purpose of this course is to further develop the physician assistant student's clinical skills, provide a broader academic base, and prepare for the NCCPA Exam through a variety of learning experiences. This is done with lectures, discussion, and group participation. Senior Seminar I also consists of SOAP Notes, Problem-Oriented Physical Examinations (POPs), and a presentation, both written and oral.

    1 semester hour Prerequisite: successful entry into Year II of Physician Assistant Program The purpose of this course is to continue to develop the physician assistant student's clinical skills, provide a broader academic base, and prepare for the NCCPA Exam through a variety of learning experiences. This is done with lectures, discussion, and group participation. Senior Seminar II also consists of SOAP Notes, Problem-Oriented Physical Examinations (POPs), and a presentation, both written and oral.
