Prerequisites: VARTS 231, and one of the following VARTS 232, 331, 332Students develop proposals for a major sculpture with the instructor'spermission. Students prepare exploratory drawing, models,and sculptures that investigate all aspects of this major project.Emphasizes planning, careful production, and finishing. Students atthis level are expected to be able to refine their skill in at least onesculpture medium and to critically analyze their work.

Prerequisite: VARTS 261 and 361 or permission of instructorRotating content in these special studies in photography and digitalmedia includes The Photograph as Social Document, PortraitPhotography, Commercial Applications of Photography, ArchitecturalPhotography, and Advanced Digital Media Applications.

Prerequisites: Junior or Senior standing in VARTS and consent of instructorThis course is designed to prepare students for the transition fromacademia to working experiences that may form the basis of a careerin disciplines in and related to the creative and visual arts. Prior tostarting their internship, students are guided through the experienceof preparing a resume, conducting a job search and applying for aposition. Students may select from a variety of positions at galleries,museums, non-profit organizations or as assistants to photographersand artists. During the semester students perform 135 hours of work,usually without financial remuneration for their services. Studentswrite a paper about their experience and receive feedback from theiremployers, their RWU Career Services advisor, and their facultysponsor.

Prerequisite: VARTSThis class serves as a forum to prepare for the challenges of theprofessional art career. Emphasis is on the professional presentationof the work of an artist through the completion of a portfolio, anartist's statement, and a resume. The students will be introducedto the workings of gallery representation; location and applying forgrants, residencies and internships, and applications to professionalgraduate degree programs in the arts. Regular visits with localprofessionals in the arts such as working artists, gallery directors,curators and educators will be an important component of thecourse.

Prerequisite: VARTS 471In this course, Visual Arts students will produce a written thesiscomplementary to their artwork produced during their senior year.Investigating the layers of meaning and reflecting upon contentwithin their work through the process of writing is the primary aimof the thesis. Taking the form of an extended artists statement, thethesis should illuminate the ideas and motives students bring totheir visual work and the worldly and art historical contexts thatinform it. The thesis forms conclusions about the work: its intent,sources, influences, implications and suggested content. Statementsare to be prepared for submission with accompanying high qualitydocumentation of the visual work and research.

Prerequisite: VARTS 281This course provides an opportunity for students and faculty toexamine special issues in Painting/Printmaking/Drawing. The course will vary in emphasis based on a particular faculty member's expertise.

Prerequisites: completion of VARTS Foundation courses, VARTS 361, 392and two intermediate VARTS studio coursesInter Media offers a cross-disciplinary approach to making artthrough a range of topics, assignments and discussions. Historical andcontemporary precedents will be introduced. It is expected that theInter Media Workshop will provide a seque to the intensely focusedSenior Studio the following semester, with students developing apersonal vision, means and aims for their work.

Prerequisite: VARTS 491This advanced course requires a student to explore in depth achosen direction for their artwork, constituting the final stage of thefour-year Visual Arts Studies program. Three years of research andexperimentation with different media and processes will culminate ina written statement and exhibition of a body of work produced for thisclass.

Required of all students who are assigned to it on the basis of SAT scoresand a writing sample.This course does not fulfill University Core Curriculum writingrequirements.
