    A beginning level course in Adobe Illustrator, a leading digital illustration software application. Assignments, exercises and demonstrations take the student through a step-by-process of learning Illustrator's tools and techniques: drawing with the pen tool, working with gradients and blends, masking and pattern creation. Initial digital drawing exercises lead to "building" increasingly sophisticated digital illustrations. Satisfies: Major Requirement

    Students focus on the vital information and skills needed to work in concert with the professional world. The instructor and guest lecturers discuss the areas of artists' rights andlaws, taxes, understanding a business brief, writing for business, cover letters and resumes, illustrated mailers, job search techniques, functioning as a staff artist within a corporate climate, surviving as a freelancer, target marketing, and the overall development of an entrepreneurial strategy.     The study of portraiture has engaged artists for centuries. The illustrator has a particular interest in achieving proficiency in this area, in order to successfully convey a specific likeness of a person or persons in an illustration. In this course, students will learn to execute illustrative portraits through directed methods and strategies. Sustained assignments will utilize studies from life and photographic references.     The study and utilization of the components of visual storytelling with an illustrative objective. The focus is on the process of developing a complex narrative painting through research, visual studies and the usage of primary and secondary reference sources and materials. The course includes an overview of historical and contemporary imaginative painting. This is an intensive studio experience. Therefore, the formal process of critically evaluating the progress and success of each stage of the assignment is an important component of the course. Satisfies: Studio Elective

    The course instructor, department chair and career center director work in concert to provide a broad-based support program in preparation for a successful experience in the required summer internship. Guest speakers and field trips to relevant sites expose the student to areas for possible internships. Students review previous student internship binders to gain an insider's view of the companies or individuals they wish to approach for an internship. From initial research, cover letters, resume writing, phone calls, target portfolio preparation, and employer interviews, the student competes with others for the desired internship. In the spring semester, with the recommendation of the course instructor and final approval of the department chair, the student is matched with an appropriate employer. Students keep an internship experience binder and the employer evaluates the internship performance. These documents are reviewed in the fall semester of the Senior year. Satisfies: Major Requirement

    An introduction to the unique creative process of telling a story through a picture, with a focus on editorial, book, advertising and institutional illustration. Assignments and lectures emphasize client awareness, target markets and an overall application of picture-making in the field of publication. The course continues the process introduced in the sophomore year of working from initial research and preliminary studies through to finished art. Students work with traditional and digital media. Satisfies: Major Requirement
