This course provides fire officers with an applied understanding of the economic environment of the fire service. Students will examine funding and revenue sources; evaluate the different approaches to municipal budgeting; determine the political processes associated with funding; and study the accounting procedures used to administer a final budget. Computer applications will be reviewed and opportunities provided to students in the use of computers within the budgetary process. Through group discussion and case-study approaches, the student will demonstrate a working knowledge of modern fire service financial philosophy. This course addresses code applications during construction, liabilities of code enforcement, interpersonal communications, fire protection system components, acceptance testing and maintenance of fire protection systems, residential sprinkler systems, and fire safety education planning.
