Prerequisite: admission to Nursing program This course introduces beginning nursing students to fundamental nursing knowledge and skills required in caring for adult clients. Students will learn essentials of communication skills used in therapeutic relationships with clients and practice principles and skills in the physical assessment of the adult. Selected clinical and laboratory experiences provide students the opportunity to practice basic nursing skills. (12 contact hours: 12 clinical)

This is a clinical course that provides an introduction to and application of the fundamental concepts that guide quality, safe, patient-centered, evidence-based nursing, centered on the Caritas philosophy when caring for diverse adult patient populations experiencing common health alterations. It includes the application of additional concepts introduced in NURS 1020 Introduction to Nursing and NURS 1060 Pharmacology and Dosage Calculation. Students will apply knowledge, skills, and attitudes in the Nursing Skills Lab and clinical setting. The course also introduces content related to the nursing process, critical thinking, quality improvement, communication, information and technology, managing care, and professional, legal, and ethical responsibilities of the nurse.

2.00 Credits
Prerequisite: transferring or returning Nursing student with permission of Nursing program director This course prepares transferring or returning students for transition into the nursing program. The course reviews the nursing process, with an emphasis on adult physical assessment, the development of individualized client care plans, acquisition of critical thinking skills, and proficiency in dosage calculation including application of mathematical concepts. The course includes a required evaluation of the student's current clinical skills. (2 contact hours)

2.00 Credits
Prerequisite: NURS 1080 or licensed RN or permission of instructor This advanced course builds on the basic physical assessment skills learned in the first semester. Topics include percussion and auscultation of breath, heart, and vascular sounds. The course also examines geriatric and cultural variations in physical assessment findings. Students will further develop skills in the use of the ophthalmoscope, otoscope, and reflex hammer and discuss variations found via physical examination which indicate the need for referral. Students will develop and apply skills through practice on an adult lab partner and the documentation of findings. (4 contact hours: 1 lecture, 3 lab)

Prerequisite: NURS 1010, NURS 1050, NURS 1080; or permission of Nursing program director This intermediate course helps students advance to increasingly complex concepts, principles, and skills related to the practice of nursing. The course places emphasis on the caring role of the nurse with adult clients experiencing altered glucose metabolism; cancer; surgical interventions; and cardiac, peripheral vascular, respiratory, neurologic, gastrointestinal, and musculoskeletal alterations. The course also introduces interdisciplinary communication skills and concepts related to ethical and legal decision making. Selected clinical experiences provide students with reinforcement of previously acquired skills, along with increased knowledge and application of the nursing process. (17 contact hours: 5 lecture, 12 clinical)

Prerequisite: NURS 1010, NURS 1050, NURS 1080; or licensed RN or permission of instructor This course provides advanced knowledge and skills required to care for patients and their families at the end of life. Students will discuss critical social, psychological, emotional, and spiritual issues; identify the value of therapeutic communication in relationships with patients; utilize physical assessment skills; and identify principles of pain and symptom management. (1 contact hour)

Prerequisite: LPN and acceptance into the Access to Registered Nursing Program; or permission of Nursing program director This specialized course prepares LPNs for a successful transition into the RN program. The course places emphasis on the caring role of the nurse during client assessments, when applying the nursing process, and when using therapeutic communication skills. It also discusses interventions for successful role transition. Classroom and nursing laboratory experiences provide students with opportunities to apply critical thinking skills to nursing concepts. (5 contact hours: 2 lecture, 3 lab)

Prerequisite: NURS 1550 (can be taken concurrently) or permission of Nursing program director This course assists students to advance to increasingly complex courses and principles related to the practice of nursing. Prerequisites: NUSR 2450, NURS 2500; or permissions of Nursing program director. This medical surgical clinical course promotes the use of complex concepts, principles, and skills in the application of the nursing process and the caring role of the nurse as manager of care. Selected clinical experiences will provide students with reinforcement/strengthening of previously acquired skills. (6 contact hours: 6 clinical)
